Chiefs Should Feed Kenneth Walker III Against Colts In Week 2

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to build on a dominant Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos as they host the Indianapolis Colts on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 2.

The Chiefs didn’t need to do much other than get new running back Kenneth Walker III the ball early and often. Walker, who signed a lucrative three-year deal to join Kansas City after winning the Super Bowl (and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player) with the Seattle Seahawks, rushed 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in three receptions for 18 yards and another score.

It was an incredible debut – Walker broke out for a 60-yard run and score; one of two 20-plus-yard runs in the game. Explosive runs were one of Kansas City’s kryptonites a season ago and Walker seemed like the perfect fit in the offseason.

The rest of the offense was pretty sloppy, though. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was understandably rusty and just wasn’t as accurate and convicting as he normally is. The passing game didn’t produce much, but Mahomes did throw a couple of touchdown passes en route to his seventh season opener victory.

Nobody in the receiving room did anything to impress. Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton and tight end Travis Kelce didn’t do nearly enough to support Mahomes in his first game back from a devastating knee injury suffered in Week 15 of last year.

The better the receivers play – creating separation and freeing up passing lanes – the better Mahomes will play. But having a killer RB will certainly allow for the passing game to figure things out.

The Colts didn’t fare well against the Baltimore Ravens in their Week 1 matchup, dropping the meeting 41-23. Indianapolis’ running game remained their focal point, as RB Jonathan Taylor had a monster performance. Taylor scored twice on the ground with 98 yards on 19 carries on top of his three receptions for 23 yards.

The Colts defense was lackluster and didn’t do a good job stopping Ravens RB Derrick Henry, so it should be a favorable matchup for Walker yet again. They also allowed WR Zay Flowers to have a field day before he left the game with injury, so I expect Mahomes and the passing game to be surgical in their approach as well.

Speaking of defense, Kansas City’s was awesome in Week 1. The new-look Broncos offense struggled to do much of anything against an aggressive Chiefs defensive front and secondary, giving the Chiefs the upper hand against the Colts in Week 2.
