The Kansas City Chiefs still have a need at offensive tackle, and Kadyn Proctor's stock is rising after his pro day.
The Kansas City Chiefs are starting to schedule and use their allowed pre-draft visit slots to meet and greet some possible picks, and a report from Connor Byrne of ProFootballRumors.com that was published yesterday has them hosting Alabama left tackle Kadyn Proctor.
It’s an interesting development amidst the pre-draft noise, especially given what’s been happening with Proctor lately. He was already considered a potential first-round pick, according to Byrne, but his draft stock has been rising after Alabama’s pro day on Wednesday.
Proctor “seemed to steal the show,” according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, as he met with representatives of all 32 NLF teams. Part of the reason teams were “very impressed” with Proctor is that he checked in at 6’7” and 358 pounds, which is down from his weight of 400+ pounds during his freshman season.
Proctor was also a three-season starter at Alabama, so he’s got the SEC pedigree that a lot of teams and scouts look for in their offensive linemen. He was a freshman All-American in 2023, a second-team All-SEC performer in 2024, and a consensus All-American and first-team all-conference player last season, according to Byrne.
Draft experts like Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network, Dane Brugler of The Athletic and Mel Kiper of ESPN all have Proctor now landing just outside the top 15 in the first round, but a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN this week had him possibly rising to the third pick overall.
This visit will give the Chiefs some intel about how they want to handle Proctor’s situation. If he does indeed end up being a mid-first round selection, he would be well within the Chiefs’ range at ninth, and if they wanted him badly enough they might even be able to trade back for even more draft capital.
It doesn’t sound like Proctor will be available when Kansas City uses its second first-round pick from the recent Trent McDuffie trade, but there are a lot of moving parts and pieces that represent some possible opportunities.
One thing we do know is that Chief GM Brett Veach places a high value on offensive tackles in the draft given that they took Josh Simmons last year, and there is a need here given that the Chiefs released tackle Jawaan Taylor to add cap space.
It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Veach add Proctor given that Simmons played just eight games last season due to a wrist injury and a personal issue, so this is definitely a situation to monitor going forward.
