The Kansas City Chiefs have been linked to Tyreek Hill via the rumor mill, but he might not get on the field this year.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been connected with former star receiver Tyreek Hill for months now, but at the moment it looks like Hill might not be playing for anyone as he continues to try and come back from the knee injury he sustained last season with the Miami Dolphins, according to a report from Rory Parks of ProFootballRumors.com.
Hill’s situation is complicated, to say the least. His injury included both torn knee ligaments and a knee dislocation, and Hill himself suggested that retirement might be an option at one point. The former Chiefs receiver is no stranger to off-field incidents, that could also be a factor this time around.
Specifically, Hill’s ex-wife, Keeta Vaccaro, has accused Hill of eight separte domestic violence acts. There were reports back in December that the NFL was investigating the credibility of her cleaims, and a suspension is still possible as a result.
The upshot of all this is that interest has been what Parks described as “tepid,” but the rumors about Hill returning to the Chiefs aren’t going to go away until his health rules him out or the Chiefs make a definitive move to eliminate the receiver from the picture.
It’s the "definitive move" part of all this that adds some intrigue to the situation. The Chiefs situation at wide receiver isn’t good right now, with their best receiver, Rashee Rice, coming off surgery and a 30-day jail sentence.
The Chiefs have talked about getting more out of Xavier Worthy, but he’s been fragile at best, so there’s a lot of skepticism about his situation. As a result the Chiefs have been linked to multiple free agent receivers, with Stefon Diggs being the most prominent.
Kansas City is now in a position where they’re evaluating Rice’s health, but he’s on a short leash after his off-the-field problems. The Chiefs are also in the process of revamping their offense to some extent after adding free agent running back Kenneth Walker III, so there are questions about whether a receiver like Hill would fit, especially at this point in his career where his speed is much less of a threat.
The pivot point for the Chiefs will come in a few weeks when they take the field for training camp. At that point we’ll get to see how mobile quarterback Patrick Mahomes is and what role Rice will be playing. Hill could also be making some sort of decision as well, or the NFL could step in and eliminate the possibility of a reunion in a separate move.
