2025 hasn’t been nearly as kind to the Kansas City Chiefs as the past decade has been. At a 6-7 record heading into Week 15, it seems more likely than not the Chiefs will not be playing playoff football this winter.
Week 14 was an all-around disaster for Kansas City, which ended up losing 20-10 to the Houston Texans. Perhaps the most shocking stat line that came from the game was that of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The former MVP completed just 14 of his 33 passes against the Texans' defense on Sunday, tallying just 160 passing yards. Very unlike Mahomes, he also finished with three interceptions on the day. It’s just the fourth time in the 30-year-old’s career in which he’s thrown as many interceptions in a game. Matters were only made worse by his failure to score a touchdown in the game.
For his performance, Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski has given Mahomes an ‘F’ grade for his Week 14 outing.
“The Patrick Mahomes magic is gone. It's not that he's incapable of still making things happen. He certainly can. But he's not getting the help around him to make the critical play that the Kansas City Chiefs always made in the past,” Sobleski wrote in a recent article.
“Now, the Chiefs are making mistakes and finding ways to lose, which is the exact opposite of the last seven seasons. Against the Texans, Rashee Rice dropped a fourth-down pass to keep the Chiefs offense moving in a one-score game. Travis Kelce bobbled a fourth-quarter pass that turned into an interception. These examples aren't atypical this season.”
It’s been strange to see Mahomes and the Chiefs struggle to flip the switch in 2025. Football fans are used to Kansas City continuously finding ways to win, but seemingly nothing has been going its way this year.
Mahomes is no exception to that, as he’s had one of the worst seasons of his career so far. To be fair, his worst seasons are still clearly those of an above-average quarterback, but the Chiefs need more than that right now – they need a miracle. His career-low completion percentage and passer rating are signs of strange things going on in Kansas City in 2025.
The Chiefs will have a lot of questions to address this offseason, and the priority should be finding a way to reignite the offense to bring it back to the dominant levels that earned them nine consecutive AFC West titles.
