INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts got a double dose of improbable bad news on Sunday morning before their kickoff against the Arizona Cardinals, as quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. and cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. were both injured in freak accidents during warmups and forced out of the game before it began.
Ward was doing defensive back work on the field when he and tight end Drew Ogletree collided, sending Ward down hard to the turf and causing a concussion. He also suffered a concussion in Week 1 and was forced to miss the Colts' Week 2 contest.
Richardson was working with resistance bands as he usually does before games, and something happened with it that caused him to be struck in the face, resulting in an orbital bone fracture around his eye, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Steichen also confirmed that Richardson had to go to the hospital for his injury, although he said he didn't know what the timeline for Richardson's recovery would be.
A separate source told Colts Roundtable that Richardson's injury will not require surgery right now.
“That it was very interesting to say the least," Steichen told reporters after the game. "We had to kind of rally the troops there in the locker room and get us back into focus. I thought our guys did that the right way. Just obviously hope AR (Anthony Richardson Sr.) is good, and Mooney (Charvarius Ward Sr.) is good. Yeah, it was just trying to get the guys back into focus.”
Richardson has played in two games this season, going 1-of-2 passing for nine yards. Oddly enough, he was the one who caught his lone completion.
The Colts will now turn to Riley Leonard as the backup quarterback for the time being, Steichen confirmed. “Yeah, right now he is," Steichen said. "Right now, yeah.”
Leonard is a rookie sixth-round pick by the Colts out of Notre Dame. Sunday was his first opportunity to be active. He's been the emergency third quarterback each week prior.
"Obviously, I love to play. Like, that's why I work every day," Leonard said in the locker room after the game. "You want to get on the field, and that's certainly not the way that I would have drawn it up in any circumstance, but here we are one play away and just going to prepare like we've been doing."
The Colts travel west to take on the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday at 4:05 p.m. E.T. on CBS.
