WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts began training camp at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind., on Wednesday.

Quarterback Daniel Jones made his return to 11-on-11s for the first time since suffering an Achilles injury last December. Likewise, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner returned to practice for the first time since injuring his neck and undergoing surgery in December.

Here's how the hour-long practice transpired.

TEAM

— There were no new injuries to report. The only players who missed practice were wide receiver Alec Pierce (ankle) and linebacker CJ Allen (calf), both of whom are on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Related stories

— Buckner participated in practice in positional/individual work for the first time since December, but did not take part in 11-on-11s. Colby Wooden took his spot in the starting lineup. GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen have both said they will be as smart as possible with Buckner throughout the summer.

— One interesting lineup change: Ben Nikkel has converted from safety to wide receiver. After practice, Steichen explained that Nikkel plays numerous roles for the Colts during the season on the scout team.

OFFENSE

— The initial first-team offense was: QB Daniel Jones, RB Jonathan Taylor, WR Ashton Dulin, WR Josh Downs, WR Laquon Treadwell, TE Tyler Warren, LT Bernhard Raimann, LG Quenton Nelson, C Tanor Bortolini, RG Matt Goncalves, and RT Jalen Travis

— The second-team line was: LT Blake Freeland, LG Josh Sills, C Dalton Tucker, RG Jalen Farmer/Geno VanDeMark, and RT Luke Tenuta.

— The third-team line was: LT Nolan Rucci, LG Jimmy Morrissey, C Josh Kreutz, RG Geno VanDeMark, and RT Bayron Matos.

— For the third time since the spring and minicamp, Tucker killed a play with a high snap. Steichen explained that the best way for Tucker to get over it is through repetition.

— Jones participated in 11-on-11s for the first time since December. He was 4-of-8 passing (50.0%) in 11-on-11s on Wednesday, with completions to Warren (2), Downs, and Anthony Gould. Jones' biggest play of the day came during 7-on-7s, when he found Taylor alone down the right sideline for a long completion on a wheel route. Jones didn't look like he was hampered by his recovery, and even took off on a scramble on one play late in practice, racing a defender around the edge.

— Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard continue their QB2 battle into training camp. Richardson was 4-of-5 passing (80.0%) during 11-on-11s, with completions to Drew Ogletree, Will Mallory, Carson Towt, and Sahmir Hagans. During 7-on-7s, he found Mo Alie-Cox up the left-side numbers for a sizeable gain.

— Leonard went 2-of-4 passing (50.0%), with completions to Sean McKeon and Ulysses Bentley IV. He threw an interception during 7-on-7s when he rolled to his left and lofted a ball down the left sideline to Nikkel, who was covered by Trey Washington. Washington came down with the interception.

— Second-year running back DJ Giddens and rookie Seth McGowan are battling for the backup running back role. Both took part in kickoff return drills, but the only other substantive note on the two from Wednesday is that Giddens dropped a wide-open swing pass from Leonard during 11-on-11s.

DEFENSE

— The initial first-team defense was: DE Laiatu Latu, DT (3T) Colby Wooden, DT (1T) Grover Stewart, DE Arden Key, LB Akeem Davis-Gaither, LB Bryce Boettcher, CB Sauce Gardner, CB Charvarius Ward Sr., SCB Justin Walley, FS Cam Bynum, and SS Hunter Wohler.

— The Colts have two shutdown cornerbacks in Gardner and Ward, but they were able to play just one full game together last year due to injuries to both players. Both were on the field on Wednesday and made a noticeable impact. Both Gardner and Ward had pass breakups during 11-on-11s, batting away targets for Downs and Treadwell, respectively. Jones seemed apprehensive about testing the boundaries much outside of those incompletions.

— Second-year edge Jaylahn Tuimoloau had a likely would-be sack against Leonard and the second-team offense when he tracked Leonard down along the left side during a rollout.

SPECIAL TEAMS

— The Colts focused on kickoff/kickoff return during the special teams drills. The following got reps as returners: Dulin, Gould, Mekhi Blackmon, Coleman Owen, Hagans, and Deion Burks.

—  The following got reps as the kickoff return lead blockers: Bentley, Hagans, McGowan, and Giddens.
