On Day 3 of Indianapolis Colts training camp, a backup receiver had a big day, a promising rookie made his camp debut, and the quarterback play was erratic.
WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts hit the field for Day 3 of training camp on Friday on the heels of some good news.
The team's top pick in this year's draft, second-round linebacker CJ Allen, was activated off of the Physically Unable to Perform list after missing the first two days with a calf injury.
TEAM
— Allen participated in full on Friday, seeing action in 11-on-11s as well, as the team's first-team MIKE linebacker. After practice, Allen told reporters that he tweaked his calf last Thursday while working out, saying he should've finished his workout by then but wanted to do one more rep.
— Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner made his return to the field for the first time since December on Wednesday, and by Friday, he was participating in 11-on-11s again, playing a series late in practice.
— Players missing practice were wide receiver Alec Pierce (PUP-ankle), running back Jonathan Taylor (rest), cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (hip/rest), defensive tackle Grover Stewart (rest), tight end Mo Alie-Cox (rest), and linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (illness).
— In place of Pierce, the Colts continued to roll out extra doses of Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. Filling in for Taylor was DJ Giddens. Cam Taylor-Britt replaced Ward, Derrick Nnadi replaced Stewart, Drew Ogletree replaced Alie-Cox, and Bryce Boettcher replaced Davis-Gaither.
— Since Wednesday afternoon, the Colts have announced two free-agent signings: wide receiver Liam Clifford and running back Roydell Williams.
OFFENSE
— The initial first-team offense was: QB Daniel Jones, RB DJ Giddens, WR Ashton Dulin, WR Josh Downs, WR Laquon Treadwell, TE Tyler Warren, LT Bernhard Raimann, LG Quenton Nelson, C Tanor Bortolini, RG Matt Goncalves, and RT Jalen Travis
— The second-team line was: LT Blake Freeland, LG Josh Sills, C Dalton Tucker, RG Geno VanDerMark/Jalen Farmer, and RT Luke Tenuta.
— The third-team line was: LT Nolan Rucci, LG Jimmy Morrissey, C Josh Kreutz, RG Geno VanDeMark, and RT Bayron Matos.
— Jones had a less efficient day than the two prior, as some of his passes weren't quite on the mark. He was 4-of-8 passing (50.0%), with completions to Westbrook-Ikhine (2), Treadwell, and Dulin. Jones' biggest play of the day was a deep completion along the right side to Westbrook-Ikhine, who made a contested catch over cornerback Justin Walley for 30-plus yards. Jones showed off another sprint to the sideline to beat a defender, which continues to be a positive sign of his mobility.
— Quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. had an overall shaky day, but did make the play of the day. He was 1-of-3 passing (33.3%), but that one completion was a 50-yard bomb down the right side to receiver Sahmir Hagans, who made the catch over cornerback Jaylon Jones. Otherwise, Richardson had issues holding firmly onto shotgun snaps, bobbling several of them.
— Quarterback Riley Leonard was 4-of-5 passing (80.0%), with completions to Coleman Owen (2), Westbrook-Ikhine, and Ulysses Bentley IV. Leonard did make a heads-up play when defensive end George Gumbs Jr. jumped offsides, and Leonard took a deep shot down the right side to Hagans, who couldn't come down with it.
— Westbrook-Ikhine had a productive day during 11-on-11s, making three catches with the first and second-team offenses. Dulin has held the lead in the WR3 battle throughout the offseason and camp, but Westbrook-Ikhine has played more extensively on offense throughout his career. This battle may be getting interesting.
— Giddens dropped an uncontested catch for the second day in a row, which is a brutal streak considering his margin for error is likely thin given his growing pains last year as a rookie.
DEFENSE
— The initial first-team defense was: DE Laiatu Latu, DT (3T) Colby Wooden/Adetomiwa Adebawore, DT (1T) Derrick Nnadi, DE Jaylahn Tuimoloau, LB CJ Allen, LB Bryce Boettcher, CB Sauce Gardner, CB Cam Taylor-Britt, SCB Justin Walley, FS Cam Bynum, and SS Hunter Wohler.
— A pair of veteran defenders, defensive tackle Colby Wooden and safety Johnathan Owens, made big plays. Wooden chased Leonard down out of the pocket for a would-be sack, and later, Owens burst into the backfield on a blitz to blow up a carry by Bentley.
— Cornerback Cameron Mitchell continues to make plays. He made an interception on Thursday, and on Friday, he got his arm in front of a Richardson pass to break up a target to receiver Ben Nikkel.
SPECIAL TEAMS
— The Colts did live kicking for the first time in camp, with Blake Grupe going 6-of-6, with makes from about 32, 37, 40, 45, 50, and 55. Spencer Shrader was 5-of-6, pushing the 50-yard attempt left.
