INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts opened up their week of preparation for the Kansas City Chiefs with some majorly good news on the injury front.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (concussion) and linebacker Jaylon Carlies (ankle) both had their 21-day practice windows opened, as the team hopes to get them back from the Injured Reserve list soon.
Wide receiver Anthony Gould (knee) and defensive end Samson Ebukam (both) both also returned to practice after being out multiple weeks with their injuries.
Here's how each team's health is shaping up ahead of Sunday afternoon's battle:
WEDNESDAY
Carlies has been out since early August, so he may take a little while to ramp up and play.
"We’ll see how the week goes," Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday about Carlies. "Obviously, we’ll get him back out there. Yeah, it’s been a long time since he’s been out there. So, we’ll get him out on the practice field this week and see how it goes."
“Yeah, he’s closer," Steichen then said about Ward. "He’s still in the (concussion) protocol. He’s still got to clear the protocol, but he’ll practice today. He’s been getting some work in on the side with the training staff. So, looking forward to him getting back out there this week.”
Ebukam has been out since Week 7 and Gould since Week 8, and neither have practiced until this week.
Lewis has also been out since Week 7, and while he briefly returned to practice in Week 9, his groin injury stopped responding positively, and he hasn't practiced since.
WEDNESDAY
Kansas City's starting left guard, Suamataia, suffered a concussion last week against the Denver Broncos and did not practice on Wednesday. His status will need monitoring. With the Colts being without top defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (IR-neck), it could lessen the impact of both teams on the interior.
Likewise, arguably the Chiefs' most explosive player, Worthy, was out on Wednesday with an ankle injury. He is a significant speed threat, so the Chiefs will need to be careful with how the injury could alter his effectiveness.
The Colts and Chiefs face off on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The game can be viewed on CBS.
