INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts return from their bye week after getting their banged-up defensive line some much needed rest, and they are making a move that they hopes provides some insurance.
The Colts are expected to sign veteran defensive tackle Chris Wormley to their practice squad, as first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and then by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The team has not yet announced the move.
"The #Colts are expected to sign veteran defensive lineman Chris Wormley to their practice squad, sources tell @CBSSports," Zenitz posted on X. "Former third-round draft pick who has made 31 career NFL starts."
The Colts worked out Wormley among a group of fellow defensive linemen last Tuesday, November 11.
A former third-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2017, Wormley (6'5", 300, 32 years old) has also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2020-22), Panthers (2023), and again with the Ravens (2024). In 87 career games (31 starts), he has 150 tackles (14 for loss), 11.0 sacks, 23 QB hits, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovered, and 10 pass breakups.
Wormley most recently saw the field for Baltimore in 2024, appearing in two games (33 snaps), registering four tackles. Before that, he played 46 snaps in five games for the Panthers in 2023, notching another four tackles.
The veteran last played extensively in 2022 with the Steelers.
Along with top defensive tackle DeForest Buckner landing on Injured Reserve with a neck injury two weeks ago, two of the Colts' defensive ends, Samson Ebukam (knee) and Tyquan Lewis (groin), have missed each of the last three games.
The Colts could get Ebukam and Lewis at least back on the practice field this week ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed to reporters again on Monday that the team hopes to have Buckner back sometime this season. He is first eligible to return in Week 15 against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Colts travel to Kansas City this Sunday to take on the Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The game can be viewed on CBS at 1:00 p.m. ET.
