The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they signed cornerback Johnathan Edwards to the practice squad and released cornerback Rob Carter Jr. to the practice squad.
On Monday, with veteran cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt returning to the active roster from a one-game suspension, the Colts waived Edwards to make room. Edwards cleared waivers on Tuesday, making him free to sign wherever he could choose.
Edwards (6'1", 201, 24 years old) was inactive for the Colts' Week 1 loss on Sunday to the Baltimore Ravens after a rough preseason.
He played 78 snaps in the first two preseason games against the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, totaling six tackles and a pass breakup, and allowing catches on six of 10 targets for 116 yards (19.3 avg.) and a touchdown, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Colts signed Edwards last offseason as an undrafted rookie after a collegiate career at Indiana State (2021-23) and Tulane (2024). He appeared in 10 games for Indianapolis, making five starts, and played 313 snaps on defense and 69 on special teams. He totaled 26 tackles and three pass breakups.
Carter (5'10", 175, 23) spent 2025 in the Canadian Football League (CFL) after a collegiate career at UVA Wise (2021-22) and Robert Morris (2023-24) before pursuing an opportunity in the NFL.
During his time with the BC Lions in the CFL, Carter recorded 51 tackles (one for loss), one forced fumble, five interceptions, 12 pass breakups, and one defensive touchdown in 18 games. He also returned seven kickoffs for an average of 19.0 yards, six punt returns for an average of 7.5 yards, and one short missed field goal for 20 yards.
The Colts signed Carter to a reserve/future deal in early January. He made a handful of plays during training camp, coming up with a couple of interceptions and additional pass breakups, but was anything but consistent when the preseason began.
He led the Colts during the preseason with 148 defensive snaps played in all three games, totaling 13 tackles (two for loss), 1.0 sack, one QB hit, and one pass breakup. According to PFF, Carter gave up 11 catches on 12 targets for 149 yards (13.5 avg.) and a touchdown, for an opponent passer rating of 146.2. Carter also played 29 snaps on special teams.
The Colts now have cornerbacks Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward Sr., Justin Walley, Kapena Gushiken, and Taylor-Britt on the active roster, with Edwards and Kenneth Harris on the practice squad.
