INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — While dealing with injuries in their secondary, the Indianapolis Colts made a couple of additions to their practice squad on Tuesday, indicating that a couple of their injured players could miss some time.
The Colts announced that they signed cornerback Keydrain Calligan and safety Darrick Forrest to the practice squad, and released center Mose Vavao and Trey Washington from the practice squad in corresponding moves.
Injuries to cornerbacks Charvarius Ward (concussion) and Jaylon Jones (hamstring) may have prompted the Colts to bring in the pair of new players to help provide emergency insurance on defense and special teams.
Calligan (6'0", 200, 23 years old) is an undrafted rookie out of Southeastern Louisiana who spent time with both the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks this summer.
In the preseason, Calligan appeared in all three games for the Seahawks, totaling 68 defensive snaps (with one tackle) and 25 on special teams.
Forrest (5'11", 200, 26) is a fifth-year veteran who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders (2021-24). He also spent time with the Buffalo Bills this offseason before being released during preseason roster cuts.
In 40 career games (17 starts), Forrest has 137 tackles (one for loss), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovered, four interceptions, and nine pass breakups. He has been a core special-teamer for much of his career, seeing 472 career special teams snaps.
Forrest is yet another former Cincinnati Bearcat who played on special teams collegiately for current Colts and then-Cincinnati special teams coordinator Brian Mason, joining receivers Alec Pierce and Tyler Scott.
Vavao and Washington were both undrafted rookies for the Colts who had solid-enough performances over the summer to be brought back to the practice squad following roster cuts.
