Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson isn't letting his contract situation distract him from being present and "all ball."
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts have struggled to find consistency over the last decade, but one constant has been star-level play from left guard Quenton Nelson.
Fresh off earning the No. 99 spot on the 2026 NFL Top 100 — his fourth time on the list — Nelson enters the final year of his current contract.
Last time Nelson was in this situation, the Colts made him the NFL's highest-paid guard with a four-year, $80 million extension. Now 30 and still in his prime, the Colts will need to reward him with something comparable; the question is whether they do so soon, before the season, or wait.
"It's really out of my control," Nelson recently said of his contract situation. "You know, that's with the people in this building and my agent, and worrying about it or thinking about it isn't going to help me accomplish any of my goals. So, I leave that to them, and I'm just here. I'm all ball."
Regardless of his involvement in contract talks, Nelson appears committed to seeing out his time with the Colts and experiencing success with the franchise.
"Man, I'm extremely blessed to be in the NFL and be playing for the Colts," Nelson said. "I don't take it for granted, and I just want to win. That's what it comes down to. You have these goals since you were a rookie, since you got into the league, of like winning a Super Bowl, of winning the AFC South, and that's it. The goal hasn't changed.
"The approach over the years has changed as you grow up and you learn things, but that's what motivates me. Winning, and doing my best for my teammates and for all the people in the building who believe in me."
There really are few complicating factors that would hold a deal up. The Colts did draft Jalen Farmer in the fourth round this year, so if they wanted to get younger and cheaper, they could allow Nelson's contract to expire and have Farmer replace him in 2027. However, that seems far-fetched with Farmer not yet having played a snap.
The Colts have the money to sign Nelson to another lucrative extension. They currently hold the seventh-most salary cap space at $31.6 million, according to OverTheCap.com. They're projected to have the seventh-most entering next offseason as well, with $69.8 million, and are still projected to have the 10th-most in 2028, with $165.3 million.
Nelson, who has made the Pro Bowl in all eight years of his career and has been named an All-Pro six times, seems destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He's a franchise legend that would be difficult to replace, regardless of who it is.
