The Washington Commanders saw several key players sidelined during Wednesday's practice ahead of the week two preseason game vs. Detroit
Head coach Dan Quinn made clear that the coaching staff would evaluate the work accomplished between Tuesday's and Wednesday's practices before finalizing which starters will and won't suit up on Saturday afternoon against the Detroit Lions, but part of that stems from who is available to play after the Washington Commanders saw a long list of inactive players on Wednesday.
That starts in the outside linebacker room as Odafe Oweh is battling a strained calf while K'Lavon Chaisson injured his knee during last week's joint practice against the Miami Dolphins. The Commanders also signed a defensive tackle on Tuesday to account for the absence of Johnny Newton, who injured his pec during Friday's preseason win with the former second round pick seeing a specialist in New York and Quinn noting "it could be" a significant injury.
But there was a bit of good news after Quinn revealed that defensive tackle Tim Settle could make his way back on the field soon. Settle was working off to the side during Wednesday's practice with his progress contingent on whether the Commanders will "start ramping him back up into practice" into next week.
Quinn also noted that Jordan Magee will be held out this week after injuring his shoulder on Friday night, an early test for the defensive depth at inside linebacker. The Commanders were also without running back Rachaad White on Wednesday after he was not seen on the field as Bill Croskey-Merritt, Kaytron Allen, Robert Henry Jr. and Craig Reynolds, who was signed on Monday, were the lone running backs to participate in practice.
The Commanders already entered the day with multiple known injuries with quarterback Marcus Mariota sidelined due to an MCL, running back Jeremy McNichols battling through a quad injury, left tackle Laremy Tunsil recovering from a torn tricep while cornerback Trey Amos sidelined due to his lingering ankle injury. The Commanders previously placed two on the reserve/injured list with running back Jerome Ford suffering a hamstring injury on Friday night and wide receiver River Cracraft sidelined on Tuesday. Meanwhile, defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. remains on PUP due to a quad injury with no timeframe for a return, casting doubt on his spot on the 53-man roster after the 32 year old saw his regular season cut short after suffering a torn quad in the week two road loss against the Green Bay Packers.
The Commanders are set for the first of two straight preseason road games when they take on the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Aug. 22 for a noon ET kickoff.
