With the 2026 NFL Draft complete, the Brandon Aiyuk saga remains unresolved as both the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Commanders remain in a standoff

The 2026 NFL Draft has come and gone with teams turning to the next way to improve their rosters for the upcoming season, but it also marked the next 72 hour window that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could ultimately be moved. Or at least, that's what the San Francisco 49ers hoped for, as distant of a possibility as it may have been even ahead of Thursday.

Unsurprisingly, coming out of the weekend, Aiyuk remains with San Francisco with no signs of an imminent move on the horizon. The Commanders have yet to show any signs of even slight interest in trading for the veteran, while the 49ers remain patient to wait to see whether a trade did materialize through the three days during the draft.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on day three of the draft that the Commanders still have "significant interest" in Aiyuk once he is ultimately released. The 49ers, very mindful of Washington's interest along with Aiyuk's interest to reconnect with his former quarterback and close friend in Jayden Daniels, still believe the Commanders would make a trade in order to facilitate the move. Given the limited draft capital and structure of Aiyuk's contract, that was not expected to materialize.

"We're available, give us a call," general manager John Lynch joked during Saturday's press conference.

In summary, nothing has changed, at least in the short term.

The 49ers already made clear that Aiyuk has played his final snap with the organization as the front office now tries to work through what has become an excruciatingly painful divorce.

The Commanders, meanwhile, made other moves to upgrade the wide receiver room after turning to former Clemson star receiver Antonio Williams with the lone draft pick on day two. He now joins veteran Terry McLaurin in the room while general manager Adam Peters inked both Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson in free agency and re-signed Treylon Burks. Washington also returns both Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane, the latter a proven weapon as a returner, yet the top of the room remains in need of support. That's laid the case for Aiyuk, who will have to prove himself again on the field before stepping back into an impact role.

Aiyuk sat out the 2025 season and last played in week seven of the 2024 season when he suffered a torn ACL and MCL, just two weeks after inking a four year, $120 million contract extension.
