The Washington Commanders will likely have multiple impact pieces available for Sunday's regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles
After battling injuries to multiple players through August, the Washington Commanders could enter the regular season opener on Sunday as healthy as possible.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Friday that outside linebacker Odafe Oweh, running back Bill Croskey-Merritt and outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson were all cleared and are available to suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles. It marks a notable return for Washington, whose status was uncertain over the last two weeks after reportedly suffering an injury during the joint practice against the Miami Dolphins, like Chaisson. Washington listed all three players as 'limited' for the third consecutive day though all three are available to return with Oweh and Chaisson set to take the field in their Commander uniforms for the first time.
Oweh and Chaisson will now look to make their debuts and live up to the expectation as impact pieces in the pass rush as defensive coordinator Daronte Jones noted the two free agent additions offer contrasting skillsets to accomplish the same goal: affecting the quarterback.
Defensive lineman Daron Payne was also listed as limited in practice for the second straight day with a knee injury, though Zach Selby noted that the veteran is also expected to be available on Sunday.
Expected starting center Nick Allegretti (calf), linebacker Jordan Magee (chest), quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee), defensive end Charles Omenihu (wrist) and tight end Ben Sinnott (oblique) were also ruled as full participants in all three days of practice this week. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (back) missed Wednesday's practice, but was a full participant on both Thursday and Friday to bolster the defensive line.
While the Commanders will enter week one with good news, the Philadelphia Eagles will be without a key piece after ruling out outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard on Sunday. The former third round pick arrived in Philadelphia this offseason after signing a four year deal worth $100 million, including $50 million guaranteed, after an impressive two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings where he overlapped with current Washington defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
In addition to the absence of Greenard, the Eagles could also be without one of their draft picks on Sunday after tight end Eli Stowers was listed as questionable. The Eagles listed the second round pick as limited all three days in practice with his status now uncertain ahead of his NFL debut, potentially taking one weapon away from quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The Commanders are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday with kickoff set for 4:25 PM ET on FOX.
