Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters opened up on the front office's mindset when it comes to selecting or trading the seventh overall pick
One week from today, the Washington Commanders will officially be on the clock to make their pick with the seventh overall pick.
There has not been much debate about who will ultimately become the top overall selection with all eyes on quarterback Fernando Mendoza kicking off the 2026 NFL Draft once the Las Vegas Raiders are on the clock. Beyond that? It's been a question mark - and that has helped lead to all types of confusion and uncertainty how the top ten picks will ultimately unfold.
For Washington, how the board ultimately plays out will be the biggest question mark with a wide range of prospects potentially still within reach. Yet the growing question through the week has been whether the Commanders will opt to make a move in the draft.
General manager Adam Peters added he "certainly have to be ready to do that" when asked if the Commanders anticipate making a selection with the seventh overall pick.
"I'd say more likely than not that would happen, but you never know. You never know - it'll depend on who's on the board, if a team wants to move up," Peters said during his pre draft press conference on Thursday.
"And we have to decide if we want to do that, but I would say more likely than not, we'd stay and pick."
Peters also added he does not envision the Commanders making a move up in the draft order, which has always been the expectation especially given the limited draft capital this year. While he did not that the front office is not "actively trying to move back," the Commanders are leaving the door open to potentially acquiring more draft picks.
"We're always assessing our options and making sure we're ready and then understanding who's going to be there in certain positions, in certain spots towards the middle to the later part of the first round," he added.
Washington enters next week's draft with six total picks, but just two across the top 100 picks, paving the way for growing debate as to whether the Commanders should entertain a move outside of the top ten. Washington has been linked to several prospects, most recently former Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, over the last month along with hosting several first round prospects during this week's Top 30 visit with a chance to add a playmaker on both sides of the ball. All eyes remain on who will remain available when it comes time for the Commanders to make their pick.
