The Washington Commanders have their first free agent signing in the fold with cornerback Amik Robertson on board

The Big Doug and Carmi Show

The Washington Commanders have made their first move in free agency with the legal tampering window officially open.

Per multiple reports, the Commanders are signing former Detroit Lions Cornerback Amik Robertson to a two year deal. Per Ben Standig and John Keim, the deal is worth up to $16 million with $9.3 million guaranteed. He also addresses a key position with cornerback among the top priorities for head coach Dan Quinn, general manager Adam Peters and the Commanders front office.

Robertson arrives filling a need for the Commanders, who return both Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos though moved on from Marshon Lattimore, as expected, after suffering a season-ending injury midway through the 2025 season. Robertson also has experience in the nickel where he shined under former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn in 2024.

"He’s a skilled player and he’s tenacious, he’s feisty, he’s confident and teammates love his energy because he does, he brings it all the time. He brings it in practice, brings it in the games, he’s a ball guy," head coach Dan Campbell said of Robertson.

Glenn allowed a completion percentage of just 42.9% in 2024 while also playing in at least 60% of the Lions' snaps in 12 of the 17 regular season games. One trait that sticks out - Robertson has played in every game in each of the last four seasons.

After becoming a two-time All Conference selection and first team All American out of Louisiana Tech, Robertson then became a fourth round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft after being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders, where he began his the first four seasons of his NFL career.

He went on to play in every game during his last two seasons with the Raiders while also finishing with 50 tackles in 2023, at the time a career high, while adding a pair of interceptions in both 2022 and 2023. But over his last two seasons with Detroit, Robertson has amassed just one takeaway with it coming during the week five win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

"He's kind of one of those guys that sparks our defense, the other guys around him. Look, I say it all the time, it doesn’t matter about how things go as it pertains to OK a play happens here, somebody gets a play on you, they make a play on you, it’s a great whatever. You just want to know those guys will go in there and they’ll compete," Campbell added of Robertson. "They will compete, there’s no fear and they’re going to cut it loose. And as long as our guys do that - which Amik’s one of those guys - we’ll be just fine.”
