With wide receiver Jaylin Lane expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 season, Luke McCaffrey now has an opportunity to step up for the Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders will have another season-long absence to address through the rest of the regular season.

Wide receiver Jaylin Lane is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of 2026 after suffering a fracture and dislocation of his ankle. Lane was one of several players who went down in the week four loss against the Indianapolis Colts in London before being carted off the field.

A former fourth round pick out of Virginia Tech in the 2025 NFL Draft, Lane carved a role in the return game. Lane earned Rookie of the Week honors after his first career NFL touchdown came on a 90 yard punt return in the week three win over the Las Vegas Raiders. It served as one of two returns for touchdowns in 2025 after notching a 63 yard punt return in the week 15 win against the New York Giants.

Lane's rookie season ended somewhat early after being placed on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury in the week 16 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, ending the season with 370 return yards on 26 combined punt and kick returns. Lane also recorded 225 yards on 16 catches and 32 targets as a rookie, though hasn't seen as much production in year two.

Despite averaging 14 yards per punt return, Lane has drawn just two targets through the first four games with 25 yards to show for it. Lane also recovered his own fumble during the week two loss against the Dallas Cowboys.

Lane's absence will likely carve out an opportunity for Luke McCaffrey, who has appeared in just one game this season and has yet to draw a target. It comes as the former third round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft has looked to carve a role in the offense in a prove it season, instead materializing into a healthy scratch already in three games. Yet his near-perfect fit to replace Lane's role in the receiver room and return game give the Commanders a clear in-house option.

After year two was cut short due to a broken collarbone, McCaffrey was one who stuck out at points in training camp before being included first string in the team's first unofficial depth chart of preseason, which head coach Dan Quinn joked was not as meaningful as people thought. Now, McCaffrey's speed in the receiver room and potential big play ability as a returner can fill the void for the Commanders is the question. After drawing belief as a fit in the offense during the offseason, McCaffrey will now have a chance to prove it in year three of his rookie deal.

McCaffrey becomes the latest now in line to step up amid a growing injury list for Washington that now includes veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota after suffering an MCL sprain.

Washington is set to host the New York Giants this weekend with kickoff set for 1 PM ET.
