Washington Commanders assistant draws AFC coordinator interview cover image

A third Washington Commanders assistant has drawn an interview outside of the organization this offseason

The Big Doug and Carmi Show

There's another coach at risk of departing the Washington Commanders this offseason after another offensive assistant drew an interview elsewhere.

Jordan Schultz reported that the Denver Broncos requested permission and have interviewed Brian Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Johnson, 38, has served as assistant head coach and offensive pass game coordinator since Dan Quinn arrived in DC. He also becomes the second Commanders offensive coach to draw an interview outside of the organization this offseason, while Washington is just one day removed from losing defensive pass game coordinator Jason Simmons

Johnson also becomes the second candidate to interview for the Broncos vacancy alongside Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry as head coach Sean Payton looks to replace Joe Lombardi's role.

While it marks the latest chance for new offensive coordinator David Blough to add his own flavor to his staff in year one, it also doesn't come as a massive surprise for Washington given Quinn's decision to pass over Johnson's experience in favor of an assistant in his third season with the organization.

This also isn't the first time that Johnson has drawn interest for an offensive coordinator role after being interviewed by the Houston Texans in each of the last two offseason, setting the stage for a likely second staff departure within a week.

The lone moves to the offensive staff were the additions of DJ Williams and Danny Etling as quarterbacks and assistant quarterbacks coach, while the team also elevated to move to become the new offensive and assistant offensive line coach.

Johnson also does have experience in the position after serving as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 before being fired following the season then heading to DC. Under Johnson, the Eagles finished eighth in the league in total yards and seventh in points while the run game had success amid a limited passing attack.

Johnson also served as offensive coordinator at the college level, first at Utah for the 2012 season then Houston for the 2017 season before heading to Florida and being elevated to the same role for the 2020 season under head coach Dan Mullen.

Johnson's stint in Philadelphia also marked his first role in the NFL where he served as quarterbacks coach for two seasons.

The Commanders did make one move official on Friday morning after announcing the official hire of Daronte Jones as the new defensive coordinator, replacing Joe Whitt Jr. in 2026.
