The Washington Commanders are expected to sign a veteran offensive lineman to stockpile depth along the interior offensive line
The Washington Commanders are adding another depth piece in the trenches.
Max Scharping is in line to re-join the Commanders for a second stint after news broke on Friday that the veteran offensive lineman is expected to sign with the team, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
Scharping, 29, was last with the Commanders in 2024 after spending roughly one month on the team's practice squad. He then landed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being signed off Washington's roster where he primarily remained inactive with just two appearances, including one on special teams. Scharping then re-signed with the Steelers in April 2025 but never appeared in a game after suffering a knee injury during preseason.
The veteran offensive lineman began his career with the Houston Texans in 2019 as a second round pick out of Northern Illinois, starting in 33 games while making 48 appearances through three seasons. After being waived by Houston, Scharping then spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals after being claimed off waivers just prior to the start of the 2022 season, eventually making 31 appearances over his next two seasons. All of his NFL experience has materialized at guard, though he's spent time at both left and right through his six seasons in the league.
The latest addition along the offensive line is expected to add depth to a position that features multiple returning pieces.
Both Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly return for a second season to anchor the left and right tackle spots, while Sam Cosmi has been transparent about his recovery and offseason ahead of the chance to step back into the starting right guard spot. Expected starting center Nick Allegretti has remained sidelined after suffering a calf injury on the opening day of training camp, leaving Julian Good-Jones and rookie Matt Gulbin to round out the two-deep at the position while others like Brandon Coleman have been proactive about getting comfortable at center just in case. Though head coach Dan Quinn later confirmed that Coleman remains under evaluation exclusively as a guard, the chance to add to his toolbox -- and the Commanders' depth along the offensive line -- adds value at a position that has inspired confidence.
The Commanders also turned to free agency to add additional depth at center ahead of the start of preseason next week after former Tennessee Titans center Trey Hill inked with the team on Sunday, one day after working out for the front office.
