Days after making a decision on his restricted status ahead of free agency, the Washington Commanders are bringing another back from the 2025 roster on a new deal.

Multiple reports broke on Friday morning that the Commanders are re-signing kicker Jake Moody. Washington declined to tender Moody ahead of free agency, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent beginning next week, but have moved ahead with a lower cap hit to retain their specialist.

Moody becomes the second specialist to agree to an extension this offseason after punter Tress Way became the first player to agree to a new deal, while he now joins Nick Allegretti, Andrew Wylie, Shy Tuttle, Deatrich Wise Jr and Drake Jackson as others who have since re-signed with the team ahead of free agency.

Moody signed with the Commanders in mid-November after the front office opted to release Matt Gay following two missed kicks, including the potential game-winner, in the week 11 loss against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid.

"Really bummed that it didn't work out. But, yeah, we just felt, ‘hey, this is the change that we needed’. And I just kind of make all decisions, ‘Hey, this is what we think at this time is the best decisions for the team’," head coach Dan Quinn said at the time. "When they're hard like this one because of who the person is. It makes it especially difficult, but you still have to make decisions you think are best for the whole team.”

Moody arrived in Washington where he largely provided stability, finishing 10-of-11 in his time with the team with his lone miss coming in the fourth quarter of the regular season finale win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Moody also finished a perfect 5-for-5 on attempts 40 yards or longer.

He opened the 2025 season with the Chicago Bears where Moody finished 8-of-9 across a pair of games, including the 38 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bears over Washington in Northwest Stadium back in week six.

Moody, a former third round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, opened his career with the San Francisco 49ers where he finished 46-of-62 across three seasons, including 24-of-34 and 10-20 on kicks 40 yards or longer in 2024. Over his career, Moody is near-automatic inside 40 yards after making all but four of his 45 attempts. Including his time with Chicago, Moody drilled 18 of his 20 field goal attempts over the course of the 2025 season.
