The reasoning behind why Daron Payne is likely to return to the Washington Commanders in 2026 emerges
While the Washington Commanders enter the offseason with a need to upgrade virtually every position, there's an argument that there's one position is likely best solidified heading into 2026. But that doesn't mean there aren't questions about what the front office could do.
With three experienced interior defensive linemen under contract, what, if anything, happens with veteran Daron Payne this offseason was a question after a lackluster last three seasons.
Availability has not been a question mark after missing his first game since the 2020 season, while he was also suspended for punching an Eagle in the first matchup of the season, but efficiency has. After signing a four-year, $90 million contract extension following his record-breaking 11.5 sack season in 2022, Payne has combined for just 11 sacks over the last three seasons.
Washington also made moves to bolster the position in consecutive offseasons after drafting Jer'Zhan Newton in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft then signing defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to a three-year, $45 million deal. Add in Payne's lack of production and whether 2026 would materialize with the organization became a growing question mark through the second half of the 2025 season.
But ESPN's John Keim highlighted that cutting Payne would save the team just shy of $17 million in cap space - or the rough amount that it would cost to find at least equal production at the position in free agency.
Keim noted that Payne, who enters the final year of his contract, could be more likely to play out the rest of his contract "rather than extend and lower his cap hit." Washington could also receive a compensatory 2027 pick if he exits in free agency in 2026, an added incentive for the front office.
But Keim also noted that there was content with Payne's play in 2025 while he reiterated that opposing NFL coaches have pointed to Payne and the interior defensive line as a focal point of gameplans against Washington, while head coach Dan Quinn remains expected to hire a coach to directly oversee the front seven in 2026. It's an added emphasis for a defense that just added Daronte Jones as defensive coordinator with his experience in the secondary and expertise creating turnovers added to the revamped staff.
In eight seasons and 130 games played with the team, Payne has notched 432 career tackles including 235 solo along with 37 sacks, seven forced fumbles and one interception.

While also analyzing the cases of both linebacker Frankie Luvu and cornerback Marshon Lattimore, Keim also noted that left tackle Laremy Tunsil remains an obvious extension candidate after general manager Adam Peters previously noted the two sides were in "constant communication" through his first season in Washington into the offseason.
Marcus Mariota, meanwhile, remains a wildcard where unless a starting quarterback role presents itself this offseason, a reunion with Washington is on the table with a chance to add stability and experience behind quarterback Jayden Daniels.
"If something presents itself, great. I will take time to iron it out, but I do love it here," Mariota said following the 2025 season.
