Tight end Ben Sinnott knows the new Washington Commanders' offense "really fits" his skillset in 2026

The Washington Commanders' tight end room got a major boost this offseason after signing Chig Okonkwo who arrived already plenty familiar with the DMV, but his role in the offense looms large in 2026. Behind him, John Bates adds confidence to the in-line blocking potential from the unit, Colson Yankoff flashed during minicamp with a one-handed catch during redzone drills while head coach Dan Quinn praised Lawrence Cager as an intriguing piece well before the team took the field.

It's Ben Sinnott who enters 2026 with the most intrigue in the unit in an offense that's expected to feature plenty of two tight end sets under new offensive coordinator David Blough.

After drawing a pedigree as a receiving threat as a former second round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the production has struggled to materialize through Sinnott's first two seasons in the burgundy and gold. After playing over 50% of the offense's snaps in just one game as a rookie, Sinnott saw similar usage through the first 14 weeks of the regular season after drawing inconsistent reps once again. The lone game that Sinnott played in over 50% of the offense's snaps in 2025 came in the week three win against the Las Vegas Raiders where he played in just 56.9% of plays.

That changed after veteran Zach Ertz went down in week 13, leading Sinnott played at least 55% of the snaps in each of the final four games to give him a chance at more consistent production where he totaled 73 yards on seven catches and nine targets.

Now preparing for year three, Sinnott is confident that David Blough's system "really fits my play style."

"I think just the way that it's all structured with this [offense], it fits my play style more. Play action, outside zone run game. It's kind of more what I did in college," Sinnott said.

The comments also confirm the additional insight into what Blough's offense could materialize into with the expectation of a shift to more a Ben Johnson-inspired scheme with a little of what Kliff Kingsbury implemented sprinkled in.

Yet for Sinnott, an athletic tight end who drew the profile as a strong route runner with dependable hands, the question now materializes into turning that into production. Sinnott could serve as the X-factor in the room with a possible jump significantly elevating not just the depth in the room, but the weapons available to quarterback Jayden Daniels, which continues to draw a bearish outlook compared to the rest of the league.
