For years, the Washington Commanders searched for a tight end who could create explosive plays in the passing game. Chig Okonkwo is already showing why he could be the missing piece in Washington's offense.
The Washington Commanders held their first training camp practice with pads on Monday, and one of their newest additions immediately stood out: tight end Chig Okonkwo.
The former Tennessee Titan and Maryland Terrapin had a nice touchdown catch in the end zone off a dart from Jayden Daniels, building on the optimism that he has commanded since he arrived in Ashburn earlier this offseason.
"With [Jayden], it's really easy. You just got to be...where you're supposed to be and he'll find you with that accurate ball," Okonkwo said after practice on Monday.
With a quarterback capable of maximizing his skill set, Okonkwo's playmaking ability could reach new heights. His impact goes beyond simply getting open; he is also a versatile threat after the catch, an element the Commanders lacked with Zach Ertz.
While Ertz provided reliability, Okonkwo has the explosiveness to turn short completions into big plays. In 2025, he averaged 6.1 yards after the catch per reception, ranking among the NFL's top 10 tight ends.
Okonkwo's ability to stretch the field and generate yards after the catch makes him a natural fit for Washington's offense. Their increased use of under-center formations and play action should create opportunities for him to make big plays. McLaurin noted how dynamic Okonkwo with the ability to run routes like a "big receiver," also crediting him for his footwork at the top of his routes and ability to win after the catch -- reason why he's a "matchup nightmare."
Tight ends have become an integral part of Washington's offense -- and target share -- under quarterback Jayden Daniels, and while Zack Ertz is no longer around to lead the room, Okonkwo could be the missing piece to fill that production where he can run after the catch.
"Jayden has done a great job over the last few years finding our tight ends over the middle, [but] we [got to] have a guy like that who's dynamic, who, if you put him over the middle, he could run after the catch," Terry McLaurin told the media last Friday.
Despite producing with multiple quarterbacks in Tennessee, Okonkwo now has a quarterback in Jayden Daniels who brings a different level of arm talent, accuracy, and playmaking ability.
With defenses forced to account for Daniels' rushing ability and the Commanders play-action attack, Okonkwo could find more favorable matchups against linebackers and safeties.
"You put a linebacker on [Okonkwo]. You put a corner on him. it's a mismatch," McLaurin added. "He's gonna get a lot of opportunities here to really help us...I'm glad he's on our team."
If Okonkwo continues to build chemistry with Daniels and takes advantage of opportunities in Washington's offense, he has the chance to become one of the team's most dangerous weapons in the passing game.
The days of watching Logan Thomas struggle with drops and Zach Ertz going down after the catch could be over. After years of searching for a dynamic tight end, Chig Okonkwo may have arrived in Washington.
