Will the Washington Commanders opt to deal defensive tackle Daron Payne before the trade deadline?
The Washington Commanders eye the chance to change the direction of the season when they face a Philadelphia Eagles squad on Sunday night already without quarterback Jalen Hurt, along with uncertainty about the status of either running back Saquon Barkley or wide receiver DeVonta Smith. Yet with the losses piling up ahead of the bye week, how week eight goes could ultimately further move the needle on the front office's direction ahead of the trade deadline.
That will also include an eventual decision on defensive tackle Daron Payne, who could command notable interest in the trade market. Jeremy Fowler and Matt Bowen of ESPN pointed to Payne as one of the top candidates to be moved ahead of the deadline, projecting a 25% chance that a move ultimately comes to fruition while pointing to the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as fits.
Whether the Commanders ultimately opt to entertain a potential Payne trade within the division may be its own question, and rightfully so, but the inclusion of the longtime Commanders' defensive lineman signals the consistent debate around whether the front office should capitalize on his trade value during his contract season.
It isn't a new idea, though, given it was Payne who entered the season as an obvious trade candidate while noting that the front office had yet to approach him regarding a new contract.
A trade that materialized on Tuesday could provide a framework for what the Commanders could expect after the Indianapolis Colts added a 2027 fourth round pick in exchange for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Though Indianapolis has played one more game than Washington, Buckner also registered four more tackles and three more sacks compared to Daron Payne's pedestrian stat line with just seven tackles and one sack in 2026. Payne did loom large to force the overtime fumble in the eventual week five tie against the New York Giants, though he has also drawn criticism for lackluster efforts at points through the first four games of the regular season.
But does that materialize into a trade for Washington? That may be what the results show, but with the season appearing to be closer to lost than salvaged, whether adding draft capital one season after the front office navigated through limited picks may be the sensible route. With the practice window also officially open for defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton ahead of Sunday night, the Commanders may also now have the depth in place to make a move in the second half of the regular season.
