Hundreds of fans waited hours at the new $10.2 million "House of Sport" for a glimpse of Washington Commanders first-round pick, linebacker Sonny Styles.
If you happened to stop by the Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg, Md. this weekend, you may have noticed a massive crowd of Burgundy and Gold.
The occasion? DICK’S Sporting Goods just officially unveiled its massive, highly anticipated $10.2 million transformation into the "House of Sport" concept. To celebrate the three-day grand opening "House Party," the facility brought in some serious local star power, starting with Washington Mystics center Lauren Betts on Thursday, Capitals favorite Tom Wilson on Friday, and culminating with Commanders first-round pick Sonny Styles on Saturday.
The No. 7 overall pick out of Ohio State was on hand from noon to 1:30 PM to meet fans, sign autographs, and get his first real taste of just how passionate this DMV fanbase can be.
Boots on the Ground: The Scene at Rio
As someone who attended the event, I can tell you firsthand that the energy was electric. I’m always amazed by how passionate the DC fanbase is when it comes to its football team, even when coming off a 5-12 season.
The line to catch a glimpse of the 21-year-old linebacker began forming at 8:00 AM—four hours prior to his arrival—and already had over 125 people waiting for a wristband to guarantee an interaction with the team’s newest Commander. Per the DICK’S Sporting Goods event supervisor, the store handed out 250 VIP wristbands to meet the player, and the first 100 people in line received a store gift card for the grand opening event. This brought out fans of all ages rocking fresh jerseys and waiting patiently for an autograph.

At 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, he looks every bit like the defensive anchor general manager Adam Peters coveted back in April. He was incredibly engaging with the crowd, posing for pictures and shaking hands with every single fan. Although the interactions were structured and limited, it was clear that Styles was respectful and kind. He handled the entire experience incredibly well.

The $10.2 million overhaul completely transformed the traditional retail store into an experiential playground, complete with an indoor track, a massive rock-climbing wall, golf simulators, and custom gear stations.
Why His Presence Matters

The Commanders' defense struggled mightily with tackling and athleticism last season, ranking near the bottom of the league. Styles—a versatile freak of nature who racked up 100 tackles and won a national championship with the Buckeyes—is expected to inject immediate speed and playmaking ability into the linebacking corps alongside Frankie Luvu and Leo Chenal.
Although this was a structured, paid appearance, seeing him out in Montgomery County interacting with the community shows he is already embracing the culture of the area. Commanders players typically make appearances in Northern Virginia near Ashburn, where most of the roster resides, so it was nice seeing him locally from my perspective as a Marylander. He’s already taking on massive expectations on the field, but off the field, he's proving to be exactly the kind of building block this new era of Commanders football needs.
The next time fans get a chance to see him will be this Tuesday with the defensive coaches set to meet with local media as the Commanders wrap up the third and final week of OTAs.
