Head coach Dan Quinn explained what a successful offense could look like for the Washington Commanders in 2026
The start of OTAs on Wednesday marked a chance for the Washington Commanders to begin integrating a lot of the new concepts and reads on both sides of the ball with offensive coordinator David Blough and
Daronte Jones hitting the ground running. While it's still padless football in late May, the chance to begin putting those pieces together are officially in motion after head coach Dan Quinn noted that both have done well in their new roles.
On offense, it will take time for those new pieces to come together as Quinn noted OTAs give the coordinators a chance to analyze the "small moments" to refine their playbook and concepts ahead of the official start of preseason. For a player like tight end Chig Okonkwo, getting reps against the first-team defense gives Blough a chance to maximize ways for quarterback Jayden Daniels to get him the ball.
"What's the best routes for him? How's the best way to utilize him?," Quinn said.
In time, it will lead to better efficiency with Quinn putting a premium of exactly that following the coordinator change and shift from Kingsbury's tempo style to a Ben Johnson-inspired offense that focuses on balance, play action and the deep ball. But Quinn also emphasized the need for efficiency "especially on the early downs" in hopes of the offense dictating tempo in 2026.
"If there's a balance in run pass ratios, then we're hitting the marks probably at the right strides," Quinn said. "And I would say the explosives will be up to knowing we can do that."
A big part of that run game will include Rachaad White, who Daniels spotlighted on day one of OTAs with the former college teammates reunited once again. Washington also returns Jacory Croskey-Merritt, though he was not participating during day one of OTAs, while sixth-round pick Kaytron Allen looks to carve out a role in a committee backfield.
While veteran Terry McLaurin was also among the several veterans also in attendance on day one, building the new comradery amid a hopeful bounce back season, rookie Antonio Williams was one who drew praise after Marcus Mariota called like "a sponge" ahead of a hopeful impact season.
The change in footwork and mechanics that come with it for quarterback Jayden Daniels in the new offense will be the other side of the equation after multiple reporters noted it among the day one takeaways, adding intrigue to what year three will materialize into. But Quinn enters the summer with a clear vision for the offense.
"I'm looking for one that has balance, like I say will always be 50/50, but if you can find that and attack in that way, that's what success would look like to me early on."
