With a dire need to upgrade the wide receiver room this offseason, is former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk officially the most obvious acquisition target?

The list of needs for the Washington Commanders has been clear with the front office and revamped coaching staff inching closer toward the acquisition phase of the offseason. Wide receiver has remained near the top of Washington’s needs with only one proven player in Terry McLaurin under contract next season - and he’ll also turn 31 at the start of the 2026 season.

The market for available wide receivers could also continue to thin out over the next month with both George Pickens and Alec Pierce drawing buzz as likely franchise tag candidates to deplete an already thin group of available receivers. The 2026 NFL Draft remains an option for Washington to address the position after news surfaced on Thursday morning that the Commanders did interview former Ohio State star receiver Carnell Tate, who has drawn continued buzz as a potential candidate with the seventh overall pick days after Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN made his case for the draft pick.

Washington could turn to other available free agent receivers like Jauan Jennings or Romeo Doubbs, while others like former Commander Dyami Brown could add to the rotation in hopes of upgrading the weapons available to quarterback Jayden Daniels. But maybe the most realistic replacement candidate of them all could be the one who was immediately linked to the team during a 2025 season filled with drama and absent of production: Brandon Aiyuk.

While the 49ers initially left the door open for a return during the season, his time with San Francisco is now expected to officially come to a close after general manager John Lynch admitted that a release could be the most likely ending heading into the 2026 season.

“I think nothing will happen until the new league year starts and then when it happens, kind of semantics, but that’s when something could happen there," Lynch told reporters during his press conference Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "The league year is -- it's the first time that we would do something," Lynch clarified later in a scrum with Bay Area reporters. "We're here [at the combine], and maybe somebody comes up and has some interest. So I think we'll keep that thing open for the time being."

The NFL forbids coaches and personnel from publicly discussing players who are under contract for other teams, a rule that Commanders general manager Adam Peters knows, but he was able to admit that he believes Aiyuk “deserves a second chance.”

“I think everybody on earth deserves a second chance,” Peters said Tuesday, also pointing to defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw as one who also drew a second chance.

“I wouldn’t kind of call [Kinlaw] a second chance, so to speak, I think because I had the familiarity with him and understanding the type of person and player and competitor he is, that he helped factor into that decision. But I think he earned every single bit of that by the way he came back from his injuries and everything to be a really, really good player. So in terms of Brandon, love the person, but can’t really comment on the player, their players.”

Of course, the connection with Washington stems beyond the connection with Peters dating back to their time together with the San Francisco 49ers, but the more intriguing layer is the relationship between Aiyuk and quarterback Jayden Daniels from their one season together at Arizona State.

"There's a couple of individuals that are out there," Daniels said earlier this month. "Maybe somebody from Arizona State, in my past."

Former Tampa Bay running back Rachaad White is another who fits that description at a position of need, but a potential Aiyuk pursuit from Washington could serve as the WR2 replacement with Deebo Samuel expected to head elsewhere. Aiyuk is coming off a 2025 season where he remained inactive after initially working his way back from ACL and MCL injuries suffered in 2024. Prior to that, Aiyuk posted consecutive 75+ catch and 1,000 yard receiving seasons including 1,342 yards on 75 catches in 2023.

Washington will have its due diligence cut out for them as they analyze a fit on and off the field with the likely free agent, but after months of speculation, adding a second 49ers receiver in as many offseasons could serve as the betting favorite for the most likely scenario. The Commanders need difference makers on offense, as head coach Dan Quinn has noted this offseason, though the front office enters free agency with a chance at being out-positioned - not outbid - for targets given other teams can point to a feature role in the room. For Washington, that may not materialize, especially if Terry McLaurin draws close to ten targets per game like offensive coordinator David Blough noted. That could make the familiarity with Aiyuk the best chance for Washington to add exactly that, though again, this falls back on Washington's due diligence ahead of a pivotal 2026 season.
