The Washington Commanders got an optimistic update regarding quarterback Jayden Daniels and several other key injuries
After handing the Seattle Seahawks their first loss in nearly a year, the Washington Commanders will now look to parlay that into a win streak when they head to London to take on the Indianapolis Colts in week four. Whether the Commanders have pieces available make their return from injury next Sunday remains a question, but there is at least a chance with three key pieces.
That includes quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is expected to join the team in London this week. Whether he suits up in this weekend's game remains a question that head coach Dan Quinn will assess once the Commanders get acclimated in London, but it's an encouraging sign after just a one game absence. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported that Daniels has already resumed light throwing as of this past weekend, an optimistic sign for a return.
Veteran Marcus Mariota showed no signs of concern in his appearance in Sunday's win after throwing for three touchdowns and completing 19 of 31 attempts, yet the return of Daniels on the practice field adds to the renewed optimism surrounding the outlook on the rest of the Commanders' season.
While there's no update on safety Nick Cross and right guard Sam Cosmi remains in concussion protocol with an update expected on Tuesday confirming whether he travels with the team, head coach Dan Quinn also noted that tight end Chig Okonkwo and linebacker Frankie Luvu will also participate in practice this week. Both players suffered injuries in the week one loss against the Philadelphia Eagles with Okonkwo battling a hamstring injury and Luvu a groin injury. The return of either player would serve as a significant boost for the team ahead of a potential toss up game in week four.
With Wednesday scheduled to be a light practice as the team adjusts to the time zone, Quinn also pointed to practices on Thursday and Friday as indicative whether running back Rachaad White will be able to suit up this weekend after suffering a shoulder injury yet returning in the second half. Austin Ekeler, whose signing was made official on Monday afternoon, will travel with the team with a chance to round out the rotation in his first game back with the team.
The team also confirmed that linebacker Leo Chenal underwent his season-ending neck surgery on Monday, a significant blow for the former Chiefs linebacker.
The Commanders will serve as the home team when they face the Colts this weekend with kickoff set for 9:30 AM ET.
