The Washington Commanders didn't get off to the start they wanted, allowing the Miami Dolphins to march 93 yards down the field on their opening drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from star running back De'Von Achane. While a majority of Washington's starters were sidelined, Leo Chenal, Sonny Styles, and Johnny Newton were on the field. The Dolphins' ability to move the ball that easily is something to note, considering all three are expected to have important roles on the defense.

But enough about the slow start. Let's get to the players who stood out in the win.

Three-year veteran free safety Quan Martin was one of the Commanders' defensive standouts. The former 2023 second-round selection picked off backup quarterback Quinn Ewers early in the second quarter. After a disappointing 2025 season, Martin is competing with Jeremy Reaves for the starting free safety spot. Last season, Pro Football Focus gave Martin a 48.5 overall grade and a 39.0 coverage grade. He allowed 27 receptions and a 154.6 passer rating when targeted. An interception against the Dolphins is a step in the right direction.

Commanders rookie running back Robert Henry Jr. is another player who helped his case tonight. The undrafted running back scored a 22-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He is tied for last on the depth chart in Washington's running back room, making his performance against Miami even more important. Henry Jr. joins Washington with an impressive final season at UTSA, where he recorded more than 1,000 rushing yards, averaged nearly seven yards per carry, nine rushing touchdowns, and 33 forced missed tackles. As Henry Jr. fights for a roster spot, his strong perforce against Miami could go a long way toward keeping him in the conversation.

Rookie running back Kaytron Allen also had himself a night. The Commanders 2026 sixth round pick rushed for 85 yards and scored a 1-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the second quarter. Penn State's all-time leading rusher showed burst, welcomed contact, and pushed forward for extra yards. As a senior in 2025, Allen rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He's entering a crowded Washington running back room that includes Jacory Croskey-Merrit, Rachaad White, Jeremy McNichols, Jerome Ford, and Robert Henry Jr., so he'll have to earn his role. However, his physical running style could make him particularly valuable in short-yardage situations.

Rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis also made his case for the Commanders' QB3 job. The 2026 seventh-round pick started fast, connecting with rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams for 16 yards before finding tight end Colson Yankoff for 17 yards. He finished the night with 87 passing yards and no touchdowns. Sam Hartman had a disappointing preseason debut, throwing for just 80 passing yards and one interception. Kaliakmanis' performance could give him the edge in the QB3 competition.
