The Washington Commanders have lost a huge piece on offense with veteran Terry McLaurin sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 regular season

The Washington Commanders will be without a key piece for the rest of 2026 after Monday's primetime loss against the San Francisco 49ers.

Veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after suffering a torn patellar tendon as head coach Dan Quinn confirmed he will undergo surgery, a devastating blow for a key piece of the franchise ahead of the bye week.

After coming down with a 27 yard catch on what proved to be his only target, McLaurin went down midway through the first quarter on a non-contact play before immediately holding his left knee. McLaurin was then carted off the field with his injured leg in an air cast. Head coach Dan Quinn revealed postgame that the fear was McLaurin suffered a significant injury before undergoing further testing on Tuesday.

McLaurin, one of four players to be named a permanent captain ahead of the regular season, now ends his season with 203 receiving yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions and 26 targets. His best performance of the season came in the week three win against the Seattle Seahawks after leading the team with 77 yards and one touchdown on six catches and nine targets, one of three consecutive games he eclipsed 50 receiving yards.

This also marks the second consecutive season that McLaurin battled injuries during the regular season after an ankle injury -- and ongoing contract negotiations -- limited him to start the 2025 season. Yet he would then suffer a quad injury midway through the season, ultimately totaling 582 yards and three touchdowns on 38 catches and 60 targets.

Prior to 2025, McLaurin notched five consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards, including two seasons with at least 1,100 receiving yards.

The absence of McLaurin adds a damper to the offense, who has struggled to find consistency in year one under offensive coordinator David Blough. Yet Washington will turn to a pair of University of Maryland alums in tight end Chig Okonkwo and wide receiver Stefon Diggs, while rookie Antonio Williams will look to step up alongside wide receiver Dyami Brown.

Washington dropped its second game over its last three and now enters the bye week sitting at 1-4-1 overall. Washington will then return to Northwest Stadium to host the Philadelphia Eagles then Los Angeles Rams to wrap up a grueling first half of the regular season.
