The Washington Commanders have brought back another familiar name after re-signing Jeremy McNichols
The Washington Commanders are bringing back another familiar in 2026 after re-signing the free agent.
Running back Jeremy McNichols is set to re-sign and return to the Commanders in 2026, per Adam Schefter. Terms of his deal have not been disclosed.
McNichols becomes the third addition to the running back room this offseason after the Commanders signed both Jerome Ford and Rachaad White to one year deals. Whether Washington is done at the position is now the next question mark as the trio join Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the 2026 rotation.
McNichols is also coming off a 2025 campaign where he appeared in every game, the second consecutive year he has done so. He also provided a spark at times in both the run and passing game after finishing with 221 rushing yards and one touchdown on 44 carries in 2025 along with 196 yards on 25 catches. Four of his six career rushing touchdowns also came in 2024 when he ran for a career-high 261 yards on 55 carries.
The re-signing also marks the longest tenure with one team during McNichols' ten year NFL career.
It also marks the third consecutive offseason that the 5-foot-9 running back has signed with the organization after previously agreeing to one year deals.
He began his NFL journey with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after becoming selected with the 162nd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but that didn't materialize into anything after being released ahead of the regular season. He then spent time on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad to 2017 before being waived the next year. McNichols then spent time on the practice squad with the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears before finally latching with the Tennessee Titans during the 2020 season, two years after making his NFL debut.
McNichols notched a 60 yard touchdown in the week three win of the 2025 season against the Las Vegas Raiders, marking the longest run of his career.
His return also comes days after the Commanders elected not to tender running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., news that surfaced just minutes before it broke the former Washington depth piece would sign a two year deal worth up to $12 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
McNichols began his NFL career after amassing over 3,200 rushing yards, nearly 1,100 receiving yards and 55 total touchdowns during three seasons at Boise State.
