The former All-Pro pass rusher leaves behind a complicated legacy, defined by a historic rise to dominance in San Francisco and a resilient comeback with the Cowboys.
Aldon Smith, who started his pro career with the San Francisco 49ers in one of NFL history’s most notable ways and who experienced a brief comeback with the Dallas Cowboys, has died.
The former first-round pick out of Missouri was 36.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.
“Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into.
“Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
At this time, a cause of death has not been released.
The seventh overall selection in 2011, Smith posted an incredible 33.5 sacks in his first 32 regular-season games.
He finished second for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award after that season. And following the 2012 season he was named a Pro Bowler and then a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2012.
He started Super Bowl XLVII with the 49ers.
In ensuing years, though, behavioral issues sidelined him.
He was arrested at difference for domestic violence, for a weapon-related felony and for a series of DUIs.
He became a reclamation project for owner Jerry Jones as he joined the Cowboys in 2020, starting all 16 games and finishing with five sacks. … a successful comeback after what was essentially a half-decade away from the game.
“That showed they have faith in me and they want me here,” Smith said back then. “I’m extremely grateful for the Cowboys giving me a chance.”
Dallas talked of keeping him long-term but didn't retain him after 2020. As the Seahawks would sign him during the 2021 offseason before cutting him in August - likely as the result of a second-degree battery charge in Louisiana - his time in Dallas would mark the end of his career.
Indeed, sadly, as we write this there exists a warrant for his arrest in Dallas Country for charges that are unclear.
