With Pettine's hiring, some thought that Parker would lose some authority, but Schottenheimer squashed that notion.

When Brian Schottenheimer announced that the Dallas Cowboys were hiring veteran coach Mike Pettine to help defensive coordinator Christian Parker, most were supportive of the move.

Having previously tried to hire Pettine in the offseason, the stars have now aligned, and he joins in a full-time capacity to help smooth out Parker's first year as a coordinator.

But it has also given life to a potential scenario that has been bubbling away on social media.

And that is, this might not be Parker's show anymore with Pettine in the room as a sounding board.

Personally, I didn't buy it, as why would the Cowboys, after five weeks, do away with a coach they invested so much in?

And when asked that question by the media, Schottenheimer made it clear that this is still Parker's show.

"Christian Parker is our defensive coordinator and everything all decisions will run through him," Schottenheimer said. "We're supporting him. I support him. I believe so strongly in the guy. I do I think the guy's an incredible football coach. We have to coach better. We got to play better.

"No one is sitting here pointing fingers at Christian Parker. But as the head coach, you have to make decisions that you think helps you win games."

So, Pettine comes to Dallas looking to help Parker navigate the rest of the season, as he is learning on the fly.

We know that he is a first-time coordinator who, prior to Week 1, had never called a game before, so naturally there were going to be some growing pains.

But we just didn't anticipate them being this bad.

Of course, injuries have played a role, with key offseason signings Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, and PJ Locke all being sidelined for multiple weeks. Not to mention Malik Hooker and DeMarvion Overshown.

Still, many expected Parker's defense to be better, and in fact, it might be worse than last season, which is saying something.

So the hiring of Pettine is purely to help Parker and for him to bounce ideas off of, but also to maybe help in-game with adjustments and game-planning.

But make no mistake about it, this is Parker's show in Dallas. Pettine is just here for the ride.
