Blue is set to have a big offseason for the Cowboys, but he's going to face some stiff competition to be Javonte Williams' backup.

This offseason, there will be several position battles that will take center stage for the Dallas Cowboys.

One that fans and the coaching staff will have their eye on is running back.

Javonte Williams is the starter for Brian Schottenheimer, coming off a stellar year that saw him post 1,201 yards and 11 TDs. Williams put pen to paper on a new deal this offseason, so he is good to go for 2026.

But behind him? Yeah, we've got a good conversation to have, folks.

Malik Davis showed flashes last season and was preferred over rookie Jaydon Blue, who had a year of learning at The Star, while fellow rookie Phil Mafah dealt with injury and stayed in mothballs.

So, as we approach Schottenheimer's second offseason in the big, blue chair, there is going to be a three-way battle to see who gets to be Williams' backup.

"Jaydon Blue taking the next step, Phil Mafah, I mean, there's some guys like that we're excited about," Schottenheimer said. "Malik, so that should be a very competitive position, but we got to get those young guys going."

Blue looms as the wild card for the Cowboys. ... and some might think it's a bit ominous for him that the coach isn't making it clear that he's the No. 2 guy.

We'd argue that Dallas is simply dangling a carrot in front of a player in Blue who doesn't deserve to be handed anything.

His acceleration and home run threat were on show in Week 18 of last season agaisnt the New York Giants.

Having worked on his patience and pad level, Blue gave Cowboys fans a glimpse of what he can do in Schottenheimer's offense.

But Davis also showed what he could do, and he did so more consistently.

Signed off the couch mid-way through the season, Davis was used sparingly, but when he got his chance, he took it.

He posted 103 yards from 20 carries in Week 17, and we remember his touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs. So Malik, you could make the case, has the inside track early on.

As for Mafah, he needs a strong offseason to be in the calculations.

It likely comes down to Blue and Davis. That will be who is fighting for real playing time behind Javonte.

Davis proved with real NFL bullets flying that he can be a dependable back, and Blue did it for one game.

Who will rise above and claim the coveted backup role?

Let the battle commence.
