In the past two weeks, the hulking tight end has seen the field more often, and he's loving being able to contribute to the offense.
After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers debacle, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated that there would be changes that would be made. ...
One of which turned out to be giving Brevyn Spann-Ford more snaps after his work on special teams and on offense.
And in the past two weeks, Spann-Ford has been a constant on both offense and special teams, with the hulking tight end (6-6, 270) now rivaling Jake Ferguson for the most snaps as part of the Cowboys' first-team unit.
Against the Packers, Spann-Ford managed 36 snaps to Ferguson's 42, but against the Philadelphia Eagles, he totaled 36 to Ferguson's 38.
Oh, and he's posted 6 receptions for 46 yards in those two games as well. Ferguson? Just two catches for 13 yards.
So, the shift is definitely happening, and it is noticeable.
And for Brevyn, he's just happy to be on the field.
“It's awesome," Spann-Ford said. "I'm willing to do whatever we need offensively to win games, special teams-wise as well. Getting an increased role is cool, but winning is what's most important. So, as long as we get the win, I'm cool with whatever role I got to play for the offense."
Now, will this be maintained over the course of the season? Cowboys Nation will say it has to.
Ferguson's poor blocking and fumbling issues are what cause Spann-Ford to get more opportunities, and, in a nightmare scenario for Jake, Brevyn is taking his chances with both hands.
Not only is he still making bone-crunching tackles on special teams, but he's also a genuine weapon in the passing game.
Spann-Ford's 46 yards to Ferguson's 13, in which Jake didn't register a single reception against the Eagles and had just one target, for a tight end earning the money he is, is nowhere near good enough.
Yes, it is only two games, but the proof is already in the pudding at the tight end position.
Many were calling for this change to be made at the start of the season, and while it took a little over a month to finally happen, now that it has, I don't see how it can go back.
Especially if Spann-Ford continues to produce in two phases and Ferguson struggles to make an impact in one.
