Blue has had a good offseason, but can he win the backup running back job with a strong showing against the Saints?
It has been a fruitful offseason for Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue, but it still might not be enough to win the backup job behind Javonte Williams.
For most (myself included), that belongs to Malik Davis, who has been nothing but productive every time he steps onto the field this preseason.
However, the speedly ex-Longorns standout Blue has had his time in the sun as well, rushing for 75 yards on 15 carries (5.0 per carry) in the 34-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
So the battle isn't over, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer stating that the players are making it tough on the coaches as roster cuts loom.
With one preseason game left before Sunday's cuts to 53, the Cowboys will face the New Orleans Saints tonight at AT&T Stadium, and it is the last chance Blue has to show what he can do.
And what does he want to show at AT&T Stadium?
"Just keep getting better, keep building, not doing anything that I haven't been doing," Blue said. "Just keep stacking those good days, that's the main thing for me. Of course there's a lot of things that I could clean up from the previous practices and games, but I'm just looking to keep getting better."
With the group behind Williams seeing Blue, Davis, Phil Mafah, and Israel Abanikanda all vying for reps, the harsh reality is that two of those aren't likely to make the team.
That means the competition for spots is fierce, as these players' livelihoods are at stake, so you could be forgiven for thinking that each player is focused purely on themselves.
But what are Blue's thoughts on the competition for spots?
"It's fun, we enjoy competing against each other," Blue said. "We know that this is a competition, but we all learn stuff from each other. We all try to push each other, make each other better. But the main thing, we know this is a competition, we have a lot of love for each other in the room."
A long, grueling offseason for players on the roster bubble or fighting to move up the depth chart, all comes down to the new four quarters of football against the Saints.
Some will shine and increase their odds, while others might simply fade away into the background as cuts loom.
For Blue, his roster spot feels safe, but he wants to end preseason with a bang.
