While Dallas is secure in its starting quarterback with Dak Prescott, could the Cowboys add another passer in the upcoming NFL Draft?
The Dallas Cowboys are not searching for their future quarterback in this year's NFL Draft, but could a new passer still find their way onto the roster? One mock draft seems to think so.
According to ESPN's Ben Solak, Dallas is projected to pick up Miami quarterback Carson Beck with their fifth-round selection at 152nd overall. Beck led the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff National Championship last season before throwing a game-ending interception on his last collegiate play.
Before his time in Miami, Beck spent time at Georgia, including two seasons as the Bulldogs' starter. He led that final squad to the SEC Championship Game ahead of an injury that knocked him out for the rest of the season.
While he's won everywhere he's been, there have been issues that have plagued Beck. One of these is turnovers, as his aforementioned interception in the title game was far from his only costly one for the Hurricanes. In his final two seasons, Beck tossed 24 total picks across 29 games.
On the other hand, Beck showcased his abilities with at least 24 touchdowns in each of his three seasons as a starter. Some analysts credit these numbers to the talent surrounding Beck at both Miami and Georgia and have raised concerns about some of his skillset alongside poor decision making.
These concerns and issues have sent Beck down the draft boards. This opens the door for Dallas, who doesn't need Beck to be perfect and offers him the opportunity to solidify his game behind Prescott. The question is will the Cowboys be interested in even adding another quarterback with three already on the roster?
No slight to current Cowboys quarterbacks Joe Milton III and Sam Howell, but neither are infallible nor are they definitively better than what Beck might become. In his analysis, Solak shared that sentiment.
"The QB2 job is up for grabs in Dallas ... Milton is an inexperienced developmental QB who excites with his highlights but cannot be trusted for reliable play. Howell is a one-time starter who was traded twice last season as the Vikings and Eagles tried him out as a backup before moving on."
When he's at his peak, Beck can outplay his potential selection in the second round and has the possibility to be a serious steal for Dallas. The Cowboys are one team that is headed into the draft, thankfully, not in need of a quarterback, but Dallas could still up taking one off the board in one of the most intriguing late-round selections.
