The Cowboys' defense has been overhauled this offseason, but can one more move be made?
The Dallas Cowboys' offseason to date, you could argue, has been just what the doctor ordered.
The defense was overhauled with key veteran signings, plus a talented draft class to help raise the floor of Christian Parker's defense. But some still think more is needed.
Given how poor the defense was last season, it was always going to be tough to fix all of the problems in one offseason, but Dallas has given it a go.
Linebacker could still be seen as a need, so too pass rusher, and that brings us to a move that the Cowboys could make.
Given Parker's style is to confuse a quarterback's eyes post-snap instead of trying to light him up with pressure, getting a top edge rusher might not be on everyone's to-do list for the Cowboys.
But what if the chance presented itself to go and grab one?
Many media members are now saying the Cowboys could trade for Josh Sweat of the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cowboys have overhauled their edge rotation, trading for Rashan Gary before drafting Malachi Lawrence to join Donovan Eze.
Is more needed?
Sweat is now the subject of trade calls to Arizona. He was absent at the start of OTAs, and is unhappy with the firing of mentor Jonathan Gannon as head coach.
Right, let's work through this.
Sweat has played just one year of his four-year deal with Arizona from last offseason, and given that he posted 12.0 sacks over 17 games, he's still a dominant force.
So, could the Cowboys - who have a connection here as new coordinator Christian Parker once coached Sweat with the Eagles - come calling? Per Over The Cap, Dallas has only a little over $8 million, so some wheeling and dealing would be needed to get Sweat's contract in, but it is doable.
Plus, the other thing to think of is what the Cardinals get out of this. A post June 1 trade per Over The Cap sees Arizona eat $5 million in dead money, but saves $10 million.
Is having the extra $10 million instead of Sweat worth it? Likely not. Plus, what is the asking price for Sweat?
Our Mike Fisher has taken a guess that it'd be a second-round pick. Oh, and his cap hits for the next three years?
That'd be $16 mil, $23 mil and $23 mil?
Too much? And more "too much''?
But if Sweat is truly unhappy, the Cowboys should at least pick up the phone because Dallas knows what type of player Josh is after facing him for seven years with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Although I get the sense that a move will be too rich for the Cowboys and they will go with what they already have on the roster, I can't dispute this: Dallas could still use a pass-rusher that opponents have to game-plan for ... and Sweat might qualify there.
