Breaking a decade of tradition, America’s Team will debut a custom Nike Rivalries look in 2027, finally moving beyond nostalgic throwbacks to embrace a bold, modern identity.
The Dallas Cowboys have changed coaches, quarterbacks, stadiums and just about everything else over the past few decades … but their uniforms have been a little harder to mess with.
Dallas has certainly experimented. There have been throwbacks, alternate helmets and enough different combinations to keep things interesting. But genuinely new alternate jerseys?
Those have been a different story.
That's about to change.
The Cowboys will join the NFL and Nike's Rivalries program in 2027 when it expands to the NFC East and AFC West, meaning Dallas is officially getting another distinct uniform.
And the history behind that makes this a little more interesting than your typical uniform reveal.
It's been more than a decade since Dallas introduced its Color Rush uniform in 2015 — and even that design couldn't completely leave the Cowboys' past alone.
The all-white Color Rush uniform featured navy shoulders with stars, navy lettering and white pants. When Dallas unveiled it, the team specifically noted that the jersey was reminiscent of its Double-Star look from the 1990s.
Those uniforms came during one of the more adventurous stretches in Cowboys uniform history.
Dallas debuted a new white Double-Star jersey against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving in 1994. It was a special-event uniform rather than a replacement for the Cowboys' traditional look, with Jerry Jones saying at the time that Dallas wanted to give fans a "fresh look" without moving away from tradition.
A year later, the Cowboys introduced a "never-before-worn" blue Double-Star model.
Then came 20 years without another major addition of a newly designed alternate jersey.
Dallas wasn't wearing the exact same thing that entire time, of course. Beginning in 2004, the Cowboys brought a Thanksgiving throwback into the rotation inspired by their original uniforms from the 1960s.
But that's exactly the point … it was a throwback.
And when Dallas finally introduced Color Rush in 2015, even the new uniform reached back toward Double-Star.
That approach has continued over the decade since.
The Cowboys brought their throwback look back in 2022 after it had disappeared following the 2012 season. Dallas also introduced another white alternate helmet later that year for its "Arctic Cowboys" look — but underneath it was the Color Rush uniform already in the closet.
New looks? Sure.
Completely new jerseys? Not so much.
That's what makes 2027 different.
Rivalries isn't simply another opportunity to pull something out of the Cowboys' closet. The program calls for distinct uniforms developed by Nike and participating teams, with designs intended to celebrate each franchise's community and identity.
After the NFC West and AFC East debuted their Rivalries uniforms in 2025 and the NFC North and AFC South followed in 2026, Dallas gets its turn next year alongside the rest of the NFC East and AFC West.
As for what the Cowboys will actually do with it … Dallas hasn't given us anything yet.
The design hasn't been revealed, so whether the Cowboys lean heavily into their history or finally venture somewhere different will have to wait.
But that's what makes this particular uniform reveal worth watching.
The Cowboys have spent years finding different ways to wear old ideas. In 2027, they'll finally get another blank canvas — something Dallas hasn't had much interest in using over the years.
Now we'll see how much they're actually willing to change.
