Jerry Jones’ eerie silence after a humiliating loss mirrors the 2010 firing of Wade Phillips, yet history suggests the Cowboys owner will resist pulling the mid-season trigger.
Uh-oh, here we blow again?
In 2010, the Dallas Cowboys visited Lambeau Field for a prime-time Sunday night game and suffered a humiliating 45-7 defeat to fall to 1-7. In an uncharacteristic move after the game, owner Jerry Jones ducked the media.
In 2026, the Cowboys played the Packers in Green Bay in a prime-time Sunday night game and were non-competitive in a 23-13 loss that dropped them to 2-4. Jerry didn’t talk after the game, nor (maybe due to him traveling to the owners' meetings in New York0 on his weekly radio show two days later.
Similar losses. Same stadium. Identically eerie silence.
In 2010, Jerry fired Wade Phillips. But in 2026, Brian Schottenheimer isn’t going anywhere. Not yet, anyway.
Despite the dreadful dots that certainly can be connected, Jerry isn’t about to blow this thing up.
In response to my “Division or Bust” Cowboys’ post earlier this week, a couple of commentors are predicting that Jerry will fire Schottenheimer if Dallas loses to the Jalen Hurts-less Eagles Monday night in Philly.
I don’t see it happening. Schottenheimer getting axed, that is.
Jerry has fired only one head coach - Phillips - mid-season during his Cowboys tenure and has repeatedly admitted regretting it. The 2010 team - just a year removed from a division title and playoff win - lost QB Tony Romo to a season-ending injury early and in that Green Bay loss looked totally disinterested.
Jerry fired Wade and replaced him with then-interim Jason Garrett. The Cowboys never sniffed a Super Bowl with Garrett, while Phillips went to Denver and won a ring as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator. In Jerry’s mind, it was a premature evacuation.
Schottenheimer’s Cowboys are playing with effort (I think!), just not execution.
Much-hyped rookie Caleb Downs allowed seven catches on seven targets against the Packers. Over-paid quarterback Dak Prescott threw two costly interceptions. Entering Week 7 they just aren’t disciplined on defense or dangerous on offense.
After finally speaking this week at the NFL owners’ meetings in New York, Jones admitted to being “disappointed” and “frustrated” with his team. But even at 2-4 - because of an NFC Least division where the other three teams have suffered major quarterback injuries - this season isn’t yet fit for the nuclear option.
If Prescott stays healthy all season, the Cowboys should win the depleted division and host a playoff game. Should, I said.
“It gives me a lot of promise,” Jerry said. “I see opportunity. And I see it legitimately because I know the things that we have the potential to do.”
Schottenheimer’s rah-rah vibe - "I'm a great coach!'' he basically proclaimed a few days ago - is much more Dave Campo than Tom Landry. And somewhere in Pittsburgh, you just know Mike McCarthy was sipping a cold one last Sunday night and thinking, “How ya like me now?!”
Schottenheimer won’t be fired this day, this week or this season. But if the Cowboys don’t win the easy East …
