Despite a dismal 3-5 record and dwindling draft capital, Dallas refuses to fold. Jerry Jones weighs the cost of "renting" elite talent to spark a desperate playoff push.
After the Dallas Cowboys' embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals, most saw it as the end of any talk of adding talent before the trade deadline.
Given how poorly the defense played late in the game, coupled with the offensive performance, Dallas isn't "one player away" from contending.
Now, had the Cowboys beaten Arizona and then Indianapolis to move to 5-4, then maybe you could have a conversation, but at 3-5? Nope.
Especially considering the Cowboys, at the time of writing, only have four draft picks next season.
But given the state of the NFC East, where no team seems to want to win it, do the Cowboys see value in adding a player to win the division and then have a chance at a playoff run?
Jerry Jones was asked on 105.3 The Fan if winning the division is worth the lottery ticket of buying at the deadline, as opposed to Dallas being sellers.
"Yes. Yes, it is, and of course, everything depends upon the deal,” Jerry said. “You see today, movement of some very key players that still have their long-term future up for debate. When you make a trade, and you give a draft pick, for instance, for a player like that, then if that player is on your team and then he goes into free agency the next year, it's called rent a player, and he goes into free agency the next year.
“The system is you get a draft pick back. So if you gave a third for a player, you might get a fourth back. That's one of the reasons why you keep your eyes open. That might help us.
Jerry did add, "But at this particular time, I don't see anything.”
So, Jerry isn't completely shutting down the idea of renting a player and then getting a pick back if that player moves on next offseason.
But given the current state of the team, we don't see any move that would see such an uptick in performance that the Cowboys would be favorites to win the division, let alone make noise in the playoffs.
Interesting names? Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests a connection with Cardinals edge Josh Sweat, Washington's K'Lavon Chaisson, Pittsburgh's Alex Highsmith and Yaya Diaby of the Buccaneers. And of course, the Raiders' Maxx Crosby and the Chargers' Khalil Mack and other Steelers defenders are also often kicked around here.
But there is a "seller'' argument to be made.
This has led many to not want the Cowboys to "waste" any more draft picks on the team this season. If anything, Dallas should be in sell mode.
You have Kenny Clark and George Pickens as the two players you might get something for.
Other than that, it's slim pickings, which given the state of the team, isn't a great place to be.
