It appears that the Dallas Cowboys' offseason, at least the early portion of it, will be dominated by contracts.
With three key pieces in George Pickens, Javonte Williams, and Brandon Aubrey at the front of the queue, the Cowboys should be busy over the coming weeks nailing down all three to new deals.
Pickens grabs the headlines, so too Williams, but for All-Pro Aubrey, he's gone under the radar.
One of the best in his position, especially from 50+ yards, Aubrey will be looking to become the highest paid kicker in football.
That title belongs to Kansas City Chiefs star Harrison Butker, but we expect that in the coming months, Aubrey will overtake him.
With Dallas making a habit of talking contracts with players, Aubrey made it clear that when it is his time to sit at the contract table, his agent will handle everything.
"That's not something I want to get super involved in." Aubrey said via Tommy Yarrish of dallascowboys.com.
With the current market not busting the budget for kickers, Aubrey's expected new deal will see him likely paid nearly $7 million APY, with Butker currently the highest paid at $6.4 million APY.
Given how "little" Aubrey's contract would count against the cap, you would imagine the Cowboys getting on the front foot and thrashing this deal out, right?
Well, we know that hasn't always been the case for the front office.
But make no mistake: even though Aubrey's contract appears straightforward, he knows his value.
"Everyone wants to hit that second contract because you don't have much say in your first and you can really earn a second contract," Aubrey said.
"Whatever you've shown your worth on the field is what the market will pay you. That's not really the case with the first contract, everyone kind of gets the same thing as an undrafted guy, and to be honest, that's what I was worth in the market when I signed. So I think we've improved on that value."
The Cowboys have a host of contracts that need to be sorted soon, and Aubrey is set to be the cheapest of the lot.
So expect Dallas to get on the front foot here, offer something near $7 million APY, and move on to the next one.
Or you know, they'll stall until we get to training camp.
Either way, Aubrey will get his money. It's just a matter of when.
