After a tough first five weeks in the job, the Cowboys have moved to hire Pettine to be a sounding board for Parker.
The Dallas Cowboys' defense under Christian Parker hasn't been very good in the first five weeks, being one of the NFL's worst.
Our own Mike Fisher has stated numerous times that having a veteran coach in the room with Parker as a sounding board, like a Pete Carroll or a Marvin Lewis, would be a good idea.
Well, it seems Dallas thinks so as well.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed to the media that Mike Pettine, a former defensive coordinator and NFL coach from 2002 to 2025, was joining the staff. ...
As a sounding board for Parker.
"Excited to announce that we've added a new member to our defensive staff, senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine," Schottenheimer said. "Had a chance to work with Pet for a number of years, he's going to be here in a role to support everything that CP [Parker] is leading and guiding, and really, really excited. They worked together in Green Bay.
"This is something that CP and I talked about, we weren't going to add someone who didn't make sense, I think Pet's experience not only in football, but in this system and what we do, I think it's just a great fit."
This is exactly the type of move that Dallas needed to make.
We know that Parker came into this season with so much hype, but he is a first-time coordinator, and he has never called plays in the NFL before.
So there was always going to be growing pains, and through the first five weeks, there's no other way to put it. It's been a disaster.
Now, with Pettine coming in to help settle things down, a trusted veteran coach who has been around the league for a couple of decades in various roles as a defensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and many others, Parker now gets a good sounding board for the rest of the season.
The fact that Dallas and the staff made this move tells you that they knew they needed help for Parker to help him navigate the NFL in his first year.
Now he has a veteran coach to bounce ideas off of, someone who has called games before, has experience in this sort of system (3-4), and he impacts positively.
The Cowboys knew they needed help, and instead of sticking their heads in the sand, they made a move.
And a rather smart one at that.
