The Cowboys have picks No. 12 and No. 20 in the first round of the draft, and they know what a big deal that is.

The Dallas Cowboys' trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers at the time was seen as a horror move by the franchise.

But what it did was bolster Dallas' draft hand.

Now, as we head into the offseason, the Cowboys hold two first-round selections in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Pick No. 12 and pick No. 20.

Given the defensive issues, the consensus is that the Cowboys, who need upgrades at pass rusher, linebacker, safety, and corner, could use both on the defense.

Granted, going in with a plan like that often gets you into trouble, with teams often "reaching" for a player they don't really want to take that high in the draft (see Mazi Smith).

Still, having two first-round picks in a draft where the defensive talent, for some, is rather high suggests the Cowboys may have gotten lucky.

But they still have to hit on the picks, provided none are used in trade to acquire a "Ferrari'' of a veteran player.

Meanwhile, Cowboys Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay knows the opportunity he and the organization have in front of them.

"Having the opportunity to improve your team, with two first-round picks, I think it's going to be huge," McClay said via DallasCowboys.com. "We'll look at the talent here and depending upon where it goes, but having the opportunity and the flexibility with that is good as we try and rebuild the team and add stuff to it."

A quick scan across social media and you get a good idea of the types of players the Cowboys could be eyeing off in the first round.

Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, David Bailey and Mansoor Delane are just some of the names that have been thrown up as possible options.

But new defensive coordinator Christian Parker will also cast his eye over players he thinks will fit in his system, too.

But are there any prospects who have caught the eye of the Cowboys?

"We're just getting into it and knowing them," McClay added. "I think there is some strength in this draft. Is it top-level, mid-level? We're still decide that, but there is some talent, but there's guys that we want to add to the team. With the couple of first-round picks, you don't ever want to say it's got to be a defensive guy.

"We're going to make our board for the best player available. There'll be some options there, I'm sure."

It is early in the process, but the Cowboys appear to be under no illusions about the opportunity in front of them.

Having two first-round picks doesn't come along very often, and yes, they had to trade away Micah to do it.

But all that means is extra pressure to hit on both selections.
