The Cowboys fans have been preparing for a free agency shopping spree after the "bust the budget" quote, but will that really be the case?

The Dallas Cowboys and headline-making one-sentence quotes have been the staple for the past couple of years.

First, we had "all-in," which many took to mean the Cowboys would push all their free-agent chips into the middle of the table and get aggressive.

But they were anything but.

And from a few weeks ago, we have Jerry Jones' "bust the budget"  and "do some dramatic things" quotes ringing in our ears as free agency approaches.

Of course, Cowboys Nation is wise enough to take it with a grain of salt after years of being let down by the front office.

But this year does have a different vibe to it, doesn't it?

Yes, I can hear your skepticism, and it is more than warranted, but there has been a distinct shift, at least in the early portion of the offseason, in the way the Cowboys have approached things.

However, will the Cowboys actually "bust the budget'' with "dramatic'' moves this offseason? Dallas COO Stephen Jones was asked in Indianapolis ahead of the scouting combine.

“We want to fix this defense, Jones said. “We feel really good about the offensive side of the ball now that we got Javonte [Williams] done, and we know we’ll have George [Pickens] back.

"Obviously, we’ve spent a lot of time on it already, revamping the defensive coaching staff, and now we’ll take the next steps, which are to improve the personnel on that side of the ball.”

That's not exactly a "yes'' from Stephen.

But there appears to be a desire to at least be more proactive in free agency than in previous years.

Still, the Cowboys' definition of bust the budget and fans' is likely completely different.

The franchise is likely to spend on decent additions who will slot into the starting rotation and be good, quality players.

For fans, trading for players like Maxx Crosby are what "bust the budget" really means.

So how the Cowboys approach it will be interesting. They will have the cap space (don't let anyone tell you otherwise) to go and get who they want (within reason); all that is left is the willingness to do it.

The only question is how aggressive Dallas will get. ... and whether Cowboys Nation believes the promises of aggression.
