As NFL free agency approaches, the Dallas Cowboys, along with 31 other teams, will be doing their due diligence on the upcoming class.
With the Cowboys having several defensive needs that must be addressed urgently, the front office can go in a host of directions to improve Christian Parker's defense.
Pass rusher, linebacker, safety, and corner are the top needs, with the offense, for most, set for 2026.
Maxx Crosby was a target, as is Trey Hendrickson, Boye Mafe, and Odafe Oweh in the pass-rushing market.
There are also other interesting options in the free agency space, and when it comes to linebacker, Jacksonville Jaguars heat-seeking missile Devin Lloyd has seen his name pop up.
Seen as having everything the Cowboys want in a linebacker, versatile, on the field on all three downs, has great instincts, and is elite in coverage, while also being efficient against the run.
Tick, tick, and tick.
But not everyone appears sold on Lloyd's ability entering 2026.
USA TODAY's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz thinks buyers should be cautious when looking to sign the former first-round pick.
"The 2022 first-round pick finally put things together in a Pro Bowl campaign last year in which he recorded five interceptions," Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote. "With a dearth of playmakers up for bidding, it's easy to see why teams might gravitate toward him.
"But it's difficult to say with much certainty that Lloyd was a true catalyst rather than someone who benefited from an opportunistic scheme intent on creating havoc. Lloyd isn't Fred Warner – who is? – so teams should be wary of approaching the top of the market with a deal heavy on guarantees."
Granted, much of this is subjective.
We can find a handful of people who think Lloyd would be a great addition, and others will think the opposite.
The big question is what Dallas thinks.
And at a proposed $20 million APY via Spotrac.com, that is a pretty penny to pay a linebacker.
But Dallas needs a stud at the position to pair with DeMarvion Overshown, and Lloyd fits the bill.
Athletic and a sideline-to-sideline monster, much like D-Mo, his addition would give the Cowboys a nice tandem under Parker.
Devin has everything Dallas needs in a linebacker, and yes, he will be a little expensive, but in return, Parker could be getting a serious player at a position of need.
