With Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles as the hot candidates for the Cowboys to take at No. 12, in Mel Kiper Jr.'s mock draft, Dallas goes another way with those two off the board.

The Dallas Cowboys are in Indianapolis for the scouting combine, and the information gathered over the next couple of days will help the front office build its draft board.

With Dallas holding the No. 12 and No. 20 picks, the franchise has a great chance to take two defensive players to supercharge Christian Parker's defensive overhaul.

Of course, we still want the Cowboys to be BAA (best available athlete) and BPA (best available player), but for most, defense has to be the way Dallas goes.

But then comes the question of who?

We know that Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles have been mentioned as possible selections, but in several mock drafts, both are off the board when Dallas picks.

That has led some to think the Cowboys will try to trade up to get one, or trade back from No. 12 to get more draft capital.

But in Mel Kiper's latest mock draft for ESPN, he has Dallas taking LSU's Mansoor Delane with both Styles and Downs already off the board.

And for 105.3 The Fan's RJ Choppy, he wouldn't mind Kiper's draft playing out like that in real time.

"If this is how it ends up, I know everybody wants Downs, this is perfect," Choppy said. "To me, corner is their biggest need anyway, and even though they may find Downs to be the better overall player, this is like the decision has been made for you, and it's the fortunate one.

"Because corner is a more important position on the field. I know you miss out on the player you love, we all love Downs, Styles, but this is the right position, and it forces them into it."

Now, we know there's no such thing as perfect, but Delane would fill a need, and he would be a Day 1 starter for Parker.

Armed with a high IQ, Delane is a shutdown corner who can also make plays on the ball.

Given what Parker has done with the likes of Patrick Surtain II and Cooper DeJean, having Delane, along with Shavon Revel. Jr. Dallas' secondary could be vastly improved. Throw in DaRon Bland, too.

Of course, if Styles or Downs are somehow there at No. 12, then the Cowboys would have a decision to make, but this isn't the first time I've seen Delane mocked to Dallas.

And it might just be the right selection regardless.
