Milton was the backup against Seattle, and as Dallas' second preseason game comes into view, many are wondering if he'll start against Arizona.
The Dallas Cowboys made an interesting decision on their starter at quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks in their first preseason game.
It wasn't Joe Milton, it was Sam Howell.
Howell got the first half at Lumen Field, and Milton got the second half, and in truth, both played reasonably well. Each looked confident, didn't make mistakes, and moved the ball down the field.
But as the Arizona Cardinals come into view for Dallas' second preseason game, many are wondering if it will be Milton this time who gets the start, with Howell as the "backup."
It is worth noting that in the joint practice against the New Orleans Saints, Milton got more reps with the second team, so whether that is a sign of what's to come remains to be seen.
And offensive coordinator Klayton Adams was tight-lipped on who would start against Arizona.
"We've had discussions about it, we haven't made any definite decision about this weekend," Adams said.
As for Milton, being the backup last season to Dak Prescott, then the backup to Howell in the preseason, might have been a little shot to his confidence, but against Seattle, he didn't let it bother him.
Milton finishing going 12-of-15 for 107 yards and a touchdown.
But did Joe take being the backup well?
"I'd say just based on the way that he played, he definitely responded the right way," Adams added. "I think Schotty said it after the game, but he looked under control, and to be honest with you, that's what we've seen most of camp.
"Just like any player, there's going to be a couple of up moments and down moments. What we've seen mostly from Joe has been growth and consistency."
The backup role is still a long way from being determined, with both Howell and Milton making it tough on the coaching staff with their performances in Seattle.
In truth, it will likely take all three preseason games to reach a decision, and it will be tough on whoever misses out.
The thing to think about here is: out of Milton and Howell, if each were cut, which one would the Cowboys have an easier time signing to the practice squad? Most likely Howell, as Milton could easily get picked up by another team.
Still, as things stand, there is no clear clubhouse leader for QB2, but in an ideal world, that won't last long.
