Mingo has been a fascinating watch this offseason, and he's in a real battle for a roster spot.
One thing I've heard from several people in the NFL industry when it comes to roster battles is to make it impossible for the coach to cut you, and Dallas Cowboys receiver Jonathan Mingo has spent the summer doing just that.
Having been a consistent player all throughout the offseason, to then see him carry it over into preseason games, something we see time and time again, players fail to do, Mingo was up to his eyeballs in a roster battle with UDFA Camden Brown.
The rookie has made spectacular play after spectacular play in camp and the preseason games, to put some serious pressure on Mingo.
There had been heated debate over who should make the final 53-man roster, and some want both; I can see that, even if it means going shorter at another position.
And now the Cowboys have made the Sunday deadline call.
"Both'' it is, as Dallas will keep six wideouts to start the year.
But what we have to remember here is that, out of the two of them, who will the Cowboys call on game day to help win that game? That's what we have to answer.
Fow now, when it comes to Mingo?
"Could not be more proud of Jonathan," coach Brian Schottenheimer said. "Everybody ... they figure it out at different stages of their career for different reasons. Being selected high like he was in Carolina, then being traded, that's not easy. You start second-guessing yourself, but he's figured it out, and he's not just done it on offense; he's done it in special teams.
"Whether it's a gunner, returner, he's figured out what creates value on a football team, and that's versatility, and I could not be more proud of him and just kind of what he's done, really pleased."
As the Cowboys finished up their training camp with a padded practice at the Ford Center, we saw Mingo being used on special teams as a gunner with the first team, and he was also a punt returner.
Also, Brown made another spectacular catch, this time from Sam Howell, so he wasn't giving it up without a fight.
Mingo and Brown both were able make their case for the No. 5 wideout job.
You could make the argument that both have already made it, but such is the level of competition, we're going to need three preseason games to figure this thing out.
And for Mingo, as he "finally gets it", that might be enough to land on the Cowboys' active roster in 2026.
